...loser than 15 meters (49 feet) to any body of water (creek, river, pond, lake). You may not cut down trees within this 15 meters except for a 5 meter (16 feet) window for views from your cabin to the water. If you want to build a building that requires a permit, there are minimum size laws. For a single story structure it must be a minimum of 60 square meters (645 sq...

I am in the planning stages of my project but reading this site makes me want to dig in now! I, along with friends, have a good chunk of property that borders a decent sized river that I will be building my cabin on. There are nine cabins on the property now, and we are all equal partners in the property. The rest of the cabins on the property were remodeled and brought up to livab...

..., maybe 25-30 degrees,. But wooded. Some of these trees are strong and straight and maybe 15-18" in diameter. I am thinking that I might use them to support my cabin rather than cutting them and building piers. Oh yes, I can see eyes rolling now, another newbie trying to relive a childhood dream. But before you run away, let me tell you that I do know that trees bend in the wind, don...

Hi I just took the Google off ramp and ran into these forums. I am also planning on buying land in upstate NY (catskills) and building an off grid year round cabin.     no wonder why so many people just park a trailer and call it a day.. as long as you leave the wheels and hitch/tongue attahced, then trailers are exempt from any building permits/regulations.. my boss at work has a large trailer out back as a shed, for the simple reason that it didn't require any permits, and ...

This has nothing to do with land ownership - it's just another revenue stream for the local government. Some US states/jurisdictions have similar building permit pricing - see this post.

Quoting: speeThey also said I couldnt build a shed until there is a primary residence. Is there anyway I can get away with building a small 8x12 place in the woods?     ...s are few ---- but one thing that is really p---ing me off is the control our local zoning officials have over property that I own and pay my fair share of taxes on. If I want to be honest and get a building permit when they say I need one (a change in the cabin roof as one example) I lose my "grand fathered in" status for the entire property, and besides the r...

...word for a hunting lodge or camp. I wonder if this is an exception that can be used in municipalities that traditionally had a lot of hunting. Instead of asking to build a cabin or cottage, ask about building a "hunting lodge". The current permit price in one of the municipalities around here in Quebec is only $50. It's on their web site and everything...

I have to send a building plan when I apply for the work permit, I guess, and will revoke it if I get the smallest thing wrong.

You supply the building dimensions, roof height or pitch desired. Their engineer then designs the truss (his computer does). Any truss shop should be able to give you a free estimate if you tell them what y...
