... located? Are any running down the center of the cabin? Is the 32 foot dimension parallel or perpendicular to the direction of the slope? On the downhill side does the slope get steeper beyond the building? Finally, do the posts show any rot or insect damage? Look closely where the posts enter the ground. What I have in mind are three possible solutions as described below. 1. Assumi...

I'd ask about the max size for an accessory building used as a home office/studio, as well as to get clarification as to whether a bathroom is allowed. Be prepared to answer if they ask what you will use it for (ex. art studio, so you ...

You might as well forget building something and thinking the County won't find out. I understand that many county tax assessor's offices use satellite pics run thru computer programs that compare year to ye...

785. Posted: 20 Nov 2011 15:21 - Properties / Bldg Codes: lay low or consult lawyer?
I want to build a cottage on our property (already has house, but when family & friends visit, they visit in droves - seems cheaper than an addition) I searched the building codes in our area (Wisconsin vacation area) In talking to someone at the county about a "workshop" he said, "No habitable dwellings - running water, etc." However...

786. Posted: 12 Nov 2011 08:05 - Properties / Avoid building permit?
One day when I was roofing my cabin, a neighbor stopped back to introduce himself. Whenever I meet someone new out there, I always ask about building permit requirements. I keep hearing the same thing -- they just won't come out this far. My neighbor out there explained how he built his entire house including...

...tric, no septic, no water. It was literally like a 1 page application. Still, we gave surveyed maps, drawn plans, etc. but they said at the time they didn't even need that much info from us...just about 2 lines of our proposed building plan. I think we paid something like $100 for a building permit, but there were restrictions: - we can...

I see in your blog you mention a building permit. Can you talk a bit more about the permitting process for small cabins in Windham County? What about a septic system?

789. Posted: 7 Nov 2011 16:17 - Properties / Avoid building permit?
They also say in a rural area you may need a state building permit. Don't take a web sites information as the last word. Make a trip down to your municipal offices with your building plan to be sure.

Outside of city limits. The state is the regulating body for building. This is what they say about it. In the State's jurisdiction, state law exempts the following from the need to obtain state building permits: ...

Wazzu, I don't know where you got your information it is not correct. Building permits are required in Montana. YOUR choice in not participating is personal and will get you on the wrong side of your building inspectors.

792. Posted: 6 Nov 2011 23:05 - Cabin Construction / trusses: is this a good deal?
Good deal if you can use them, but I wouldn't change my cabin design just for that. 24' is a good length for a garage though. If you need a building permit, make sure you get all the required engineering documentation.

...hould it continue, property rights may dissolve entirely. A large problem in the USA is that many "environmental" laws have no basis in science and have more to do with enhancing revenue. Building permits are often the most egregious of these. Regardless of your politics, any construction should be responsible whether it's required by government or not. ...

I don't have any problem with getting building permits, as long as they don't cost an exorbitant amount (like some places in California, where it can cost more for the permits than for the m...

Well, I don't have a lot of money but made sure I got building permits. As far as the comment about Native Americans a high price was paid for what you consider "freedom".

I know that the mention of building codes will raise the hackles of a few, but there may be some readers who would be interested. To my mind the codes are a wealth of information to a do-it-yourself builder. Even if th...

Hello all, Great website, and plenty of excellent information to be found here. I have purchased 7 acres of relatively flat waterfront property, and am anticipating building a small cabin in the spring. This property is about 4 hours from Toronto. I have enquired about building a 100 sq ft cabin without a permit, and...

You may also want to talk to the planning department. Where I am at (North of Kingston, Ontario) you are able to apply for a minor variance. The planning department also recommended that I make the building look bigger i.e. wrap around deck. That I am finding is the easy hurdle to clear as far as septic I was told by the same department that I may use a composting toilet (Class 1 sewage...

There are a lot of people in Wisconsin who build garages or sheds for cabins to get out of building permits and size requirements. Our building inspector even suggested that we do that-said he would just look the other way, but we ...

...ssuming you may be running into trouble with your county. Hope not. Is your cabin only suppose to be a shed? Your county may have a website you can go to that would define this for you. Did you get a building permit and if so did you have to build a minimum square footage? I would keep it looking as "shed like" as possible until quite a bit of time passes. Do yo...

Ah yes...one of the bonuses of being in "lawless Montana" is that we didn't have to have a building permit! It's a long story, but the gist is that we are between 2 jurisdictions and neither the county nor the township has authority to issue one. No inspecti...

He also briefly looked...

Tennessee. No income tax. Plenty of water. OK for solar. Some spots OK for wind. Weather is moderate. Land is pretty cheap. Many rural counties have no building codes so no permits required for anything...the Electric company is the one who tries to control your building. If you don't use them, they los...

If you buy in a unincorporated township in Canada there are not as many rules. You will still need building permits however.

... this project was fun ... I particularly enjoyed the challenge of running electrical wire and lighting. I almost made this cabin completely green ...ie no electricity but running it from an existing building I had built about 15 years ago was a no brainer. I did opt for the compost toilet though as adding to an existing septic permit is pretty costly in our county. The...
