...nd up with power happy clerks abusing the power they have. It's funny that in our attempts to go off the grid we end up at the mercy of the very people we are trying to avoid. Had I to do it over again I would take my chances by building without permits.

Depends where you are in Canada . The only way to know is to ask your local building inspector . In Ont. in my municipality it's 10 SQ. M . lofts don't count if less than 4 ft. of head room , but you can't build anything until you have the buil...

There is an article on greenbuildingadvisor.com that covers this very thing. 486. Posted: 5 Sep 2013 21:49 - Cabin Construction / How did you design your cabin?
I spent a couple of hundred dollars on the internet ordering what was promised a complete set of plans, what I received would have been plenty for me to build with, but when I took them to the building department I was pretty much laughed out of the building. I quickly learned that even though I was building in the middle of nowhere if I wanted ...

... We are in the process of applying for a minor variance, due to the steepness of the lot. There is presently a trailer on the property, and an outhouse. We are unsure of the process needed to get a building permit, hydro, etc. Our plan is to build the stairs to the waterfront, and dock first, and then tackle the cabin. Some information regarding upcoming costs and req...

Hi all, Getting to the point in my build where I need to put in the loft. See build here; http://www.small-cabin.com/forum/6_3652_0.html Where I live, you can build a building that is under 215 sqft and 15' tall or less without a permit. Now that I have the 4 walls up, I'm afraid that I'll eventually get some type of inspe...

My family has some land in Gunnison County in Colorado.     ...cratching your head here and there. These plans are not instructional material for beginners, they are minimally complete plans for experienced builders. They say there is enough for submittal for a building permit, so the basics should be there. For $25 I'd say it's worth it, but again, I haven't seen their plans.
