Hi all, Just bought a place north of bracebridge in ontario. I called the town and they said there is a 10 000 Development fee and a 500 building permit to get start. + multiple other permits along the way. INSANE !! They also said I couldnt build a shed until there is a primary residence. ...

Tom, My neighbor in town built a building that looks like a guard tower or an elevator shaft. It is an eyesore! He said it was a storage shed and play house for the kids. The code required a permit yet he...

My only personal bad experience with building/zoning regulations was years ago. I had built a shed in the yard. The neighbor had a grudge against us because our trees shed leaves in the fall and some would blow into her yard. Sh...

...word for a hunting lodge or camp. I wonder if this is an exception that can be used in municipalities that traditionally had a lot of hunting. Instead of asking to build a cabin or cottage, ask about building a "hunting lodge". The current permit price in one of the municipalities around here in Quebec is only $50. It's on their web site and everything...

The zoning in our area allows a building of up to 270 square feet without a permit, for accessory buildings only. Does anyone here know the definition of an accessory building...

... down here. We did get some very cold wind chills last winter (like 19 below) but it was a two day event. Most frost we get exists only on grass and on roof tops most of the time. Where we're building we don't even have to file for a building permit. No inspections. The one thing we do have to do is get a septic permit and ...

I have to send a building plan when I apply for the work permit, I guess, and will revoke it if I get the smallest thing wrong.

You supply the building dimensions, roof height or pitch desired. Their engineer then designs the truss (his computer does). Any truss shop should be able to give you a free estimate if you tell them what y...

... will still have to comply with the zoning restrictions within 3 1/2 hours from Toronto. This means anything larger than 100 sq feet you will need a permit and usually the minimum size is 676 sq. ft. Building an 8 X 12 cabin is still not permitted as it is considered an accessory building and you must have a primary residence there first....

The soil is pretty rocky and the frost line is pretty shallow. Building permits and inspections are pretty easy to get by here, we are hillbillies after all. ;) The site has good drainage and the slope is minimal. The stockpiling will...

    1. There is no simple answer without knowing more about the property and what possible restrictions you may face. Questions: Is there any need to meet codes? Building permits/inspectors involved? Do you have freezing weather with the resultant possible ground/foundation heaving concerns? What type of soil is there, clay, gravel, r...

...creased the heating bill. As I mentioned above many folks confuse air barriers and vapor barriers. The wraps on the outside are not vapor barriers. They are air infiltration barriers. Tar paper or building felt is the original air barrier. Tar paper stops air movement but does permit vapor to pass through. The felt absorbs water and the water can evaporate. The new wra...

...#039;ve got 25 acres north of Maynooth, Ontario, not far from where our admin's cabin is, I think, and I'm stuck trying to decide whether to go with a simple 10x10 cabin to stay away from a building permit or to go bigger for the space. The cabin will be for weekends away for myself, my wife and our two youg sons. We're only four kilometres from the inlaw...

898. Posted: 25 Oct 2010 12:41 - Cabin Construction / Other wood than pine?
I asked the same question over at the "other" forum because my 17 acres is all hardwoods, mostly beech and maple. It may be difficult to screw into hardwood and if you need a building permit the wood may need to be graded. I've decided to go with a combination of stick built commercial lumber and some posts from my own wood.

The geographic location also matters. Northern or h...
