Thanks Avan. I do have a house, but the problem is they feel the gazebo is too close to my lake. And it was built by the contractor without a building permit (he said none was needed, it is not 'habitation'!). Can you give me advice where I can find exactly what the regulations are, where on my property c...

...oundation etc. But you will pass through lots of loopholes by doing the remodel/improvement deal. My county was real good to me. It took me a total of about 20 minutes at the planning dept (1st stop) then the actual building dept. Total cost was $45 for my address (did that via the internet), $90 for planning dept (site plan), then $415 for building dept. ...

Hi all, My last post thought me a lot and made me realize that building something from scratch, on my own, at this time of my life will, will be too ambitious of an endeavor. Another idea I had was to try to find a small single family for sale in PA, w...

Quoting: MtnDonIn a way you can't blame the neighbors, if they have paid their pound of flesh and obtained all the legal permits and you did not. Well said, MtnDon. The building codes, permitting and enforcement have not been created to generate revenue for the local jurisdiction. There are real life and safety issues behin...

...there is also the "no permit" shed allowed (no permit CABIN not allowed) . BUT, I still had to make a sketch with dimensions , intentions of use (storage of course) etc...and mail it to the building inspector. This is really done for the assessors , but was required, even though no actual permit needed to be issued. It is possib...

...t for now Sounds like you knew a permit of some sort was required to be a legal build. Fully research what would be allowed by to meet zoning laws and what sort of permits would be needed to do what you are building. Ideally you already searched out all that back before you became the property owner. If luck is with you all the local authority...

It should be noted that as in all Ontario communities that are regulated, an accessory building is not generally allowed unless there is a principal building on the lot. My fear is definitely that someone from the town will come and either fin...

My local municipality allows a shed, etc. that is maximum 108 sq. ft. without a building permit. I am planning on building a cabin that is barn style, approx. 10x10 ft, with a loft. I will buy it prefabbed and then modify it structur...

...ternet for that township does not include any reference to the RCA. But they do list a fairly complete list of names, phone numbers and (in some cases) e-mail address for contacts within the zoning, building code and sewage enforcment departments (see here: http://www.chestnuthilltwp-pa.gov/board.htm#Reception), so it should not be hard to get answers. If they do recognize the RCA, that...

...... will it work? I suspect it probably would. But you need to ask two more questions: 1. Is it legal? Absolutly not! 2. Will I get caught? That depends... most likely on what area you're building in, how remote your cabin location is, how much land you have and how well your neighbors like you. Sewer systems are getting more attention it the remote areas of PA than probabl...

...are always white. Always. Following that reasoning, the black wire in DC is always Positive. As in AC the ground wire in DC is always bare or green. No need for colored tape or markers. If you were building a car or a trailer, go ahead and use red for positive, black for negative. If this is a cabin, I'd suggest using the NEC convention. If a real electrician comes along sometime i...

I didn't know there were "wet and dry" saunas until I asked about a building permit for the building. I was told if it's wet you need to connect to an approved septic system, and if it's dry, you need no pe...

WSHTF is another good reason to avoid a building permit.     I have a lot on an unserviced island on lake Moria, in Madoc Ontario. The ground cover is all rock with lots of trees, I have been looking here for info on gray water systems that will comply with building code. I have several hoops to jump through to get a building permit, but for the piece of mind it will be worth it. Cheers Jeff.

MO is our better option - no building permits or inspections in most rural areas.
