If you buy in a unincorporated township in Canada there are not as many rules. You will still need building permits however.

... this project was fun ... I particularly enjoyed the challenge of running electrical wire and lighting. I almost made this cabin completely green ...ie no electricity but running it from an existing building I had built about 15 years ago was a no brainer. I did opt for the compost toilet though as adding to an existing septic permit is pretty costly in our county. The...

Love it! Congratulations. I am also the unskilled hauler so can relate and am glad to read that someone appreciates the unskilled. I feel guilty as my husband is building that "all" I am doing is making trips back and forth hauling. We have about a 300' hike only. No loading and unloading a boat. Yikes. I will not complain again. We ...

As I'm having a lot of trouble going through Google and deciphering all the legal muckity-muck, I'd like to chime in and ask, how are the counties in Vermont and New Hampshire regarding building permits? Perhaps some of you would know; southeastern Vermont and Southern New Hampshire (as well as Coos County way up north) would be my dream spots to break groun...

I've been arguing with the Boat Inspector about the need for a sprinkler system. My neighbours claim that I've violated the neighbourhood By-Laws...

We have not been approached yet, but are getting our septic in this year (which you have to do in order to pull a building permit) so that we can pull a permit. if you start building and are caught it ca...

... to buy sticks and OSB at home depot. - The way builders think now, is in terms of whats on the shelf at the store, and what will pass 'code' for inspection. If you are planning to get a building permit, be prepared to have many many hours wasted by the building dept. No contractor has that much time allotted for that kind of waste - only the...

...haring! It sounds like quite an endeavor to get all of your materials up there but so worth it to really get away. The look on your son's face says it all. We managed to get around having a building permit at all where we are (we're in a no-mans-land between the county and the town plat.) We were able to get a septic permit and electrical ...

940. Posted: 16 Aug 2011 17:36 - General Forum / using a shed as a cabin
.... MtnDon is correct however. The first step is to check with the permitting authority to see what the options are. In PA I have two options- upgrade the shed/cabin to meet the standard residential building codes (which can often be done on new sheds, for additional $'s) or permit the structure as a "recreational use property", which...

Check with the local building permit/inspection department. There will be certain requirements that a cabin or other building meant to be lived in must have.

...cial to the community also. They reffered to is as providing "wood fiber" for the community. In my state, with 20.25 acres, it was about $32 a year in taxes. Of course, when I put the building on it, they removed 1 acres from the farm status (you must have 20 acres minimum to qualify, they round up, so 19.5 actually) and even with 1 acre removed, I still have a total of ov...

To Smitty's point... before you conclude permits are a bad thing I would check with the local permiting authority to see what your options are. I am in the planning stages of building a cabin in south-central PA. I sent an e-mail to the Township Secretary (got her address from a Google search), and after trading notes with some d...

In Ohio, permit or not varies by county. Some rural counties don't require a building permit, but do have rules about septic setup.
