1291. Posted: 21 Jul 2009 10:36 - Off-Grid Living / Just bought solar kit, anything else I need?
...n I run all components under the cabin in crawl space and if so do I need to run anything into the interior of the cabin above the crawl space? 3. What kind of cable do I need to get for connecting solar panel to circuit breaker (I need to buy a separate one from kit since I have to run solar panel about 40 feet from cabin). Thanks!...

Looks like a nice solar pack. Quoting: scrimshawAnything else I need? Someone mentioned an inverter switch. The kit already comes with 30 amp Charge Controller and 175W Inverter Included. With solar...

Just bought this solar kit: http://www.costco.com/Browse/Product.aspx?Prodid=11113663&whse=BC&topnav=&browse=&lan g=en-US I had to order separate 2 12V batteries and cables as well as out...

Quoting: scrimshawMy solar panel will be about 125 yards away There will be some voltage drop over that distance. See Voltage Drop Calculator. Keep in mind that inverter consumes power even w...

1295. Posted: 14 Jul 2009 14:09 - Off-Grid Living / Location of charge controller, inverter, batteries and solar panels?
I think I'm ready to make my purchase of a solar system. I'm probably going to go with an 80 watt solar panel, 1000w inverter, 15 amp charge controller and 2 AGM 12V batteries. I've got...

...centl lights), and five wall receptacles (two are outside). All lights have separate switches. Not that good with "power" so am still trying to find out what I need. As long as I keep my solar system below $1000 I will be happy. Is a 80 watt solar panel too much, or necessary or should I go with something smaller? I want 4-8 hours o...

1297. Posted: 12 Jul 2009 10:06 - Off-Grid Living / Wiring a small cabin for 12V?
...his is very difficult. Not only does this limit the types of things you can plug in, your wiring length must be very limited due to DC power loss. Better to run lines for AC and lines for DC. My own solar wiring marathon went like this: 1. Decided on inverter AC exclusively, because with 3 kids, I wanted to keep them happy with charging their games, music players, etc. 2. A couple yea...

Hey there, Stumbled on your site while "simple solar cabin". My wife and I have just built a small (600 sq. ft.) cabin off-grid in a town called Loring, ON. We were planning on going solar for our very limited e...

1299. Posted: 9 Jul 2009 13:18 - Off-Grid Living / Off Grid Living - Cabin Solar Power Setup
Quoting: AnonymousIs it better to charge it at home first than use the 15 or 30watt panel to maintain the charge? I doesn't really matter - it will just take longer to charge with the solar panel than with the AC/DC charger/maintainer. I think I used the AC/DC charger only once, when I bough my PowerBox 1200 first. Afterward I brought i...

Usually, solar system components (solar panel, charge controller, inverter) come with the diagram on how to connect them. Here is a typical basic solar...

1301. Posted: 3 Jul 2009 00:24 - Off-Grid Living / Solar for 600 ft cabin:
To get reasonably accurate answer, you would have to calculate the total required wattage vs. battery capacity vs. solar panel specs and how fast you need it to be re-charged. For example, a typical car battery is 70A/hr. That's @ 12V = 840W/hr --- i.e. a brand new, fully charged...

Any thoughts on how many solar panels and of what voltage I would need. Thanks for the helpful website. Saw what you used, but unsure how to install. Any helpful sites or posts on install/setup...

1303. Posted: 18 May 2009 03:28 - Cabin Construction / How high can a cabin be?
No, I'm still planning mine. You are right about the solar system...that is in fact the owners' power shed, and my guess is they made it that tall to keep the panels in the sun longer.

...oes through heat such a instant hot water propane setup I'm thinking of buying from the Sportsman Guide, that this should kill all the bad things. Do you know if this is true? Also if I setup my solar panel away from my cabin, should I run #10 guage wire to dc appliances or to in verter and then to ac appliances?

1306. Posted: 5 Jan 2009 16:54 - Off-Grid Living / Self-powering Generator?
...equire for electric motor to continue running and how many batteries along with the set-up of alternator and generator using belt-driven pulley system will it take to keep this going. The reason for solar panel is so that electric motor could cool off by being shut down during the daytime when sun is up. If the electric motor requires pretty good power to get it go...

...ttery. Physical laws dictate that you simply cannot produce energy in any way that exceeds the energy required to produce it. Friction alone will prevent you from achieving your goal. You did mention solar panels, and that does introduce another energy source into the equation, but you could put that current directly to the batteries and be further ahead.

1308. Posted: 4 Jan 2009 22:33 - Off-Grid Living / Self-powering Generator?
...y cannot be created, so you cannot have any system producing more energy than it uses. Want to enlight that? If you put together an electric motor, generator, alternator (from car), volt regulator, solar panels, 4-6 deep cycles battery, and a DC panel... I think it can be possible.. just need to find electric motor that require a low contuining volt ...

I will get right to this projec...

if I need a foundation out of concrete then I will need a permit which means i need electricial and plumping from standard rules in my province... i want my own electricial system via solar panels because i know how it works and my own water system... what are your opnions on this?

1312. Posted: 9 Oct 2008 23:46 - General Forum / Few questions...
...ight up. I suspect most thieves would be too lazy to cart away a heavy battery, especially if you keep the closest vehicle access a hundred feet or so away (a good gate could help with that). For the solar panels, maybe it will be enough to have the approach to the cabin be from the north. Thieves will probably walk around the place checking doors and windows but they...

1316. Posted: 6 Sep 2008 01:36 - Off-Grid Living / Off-grid power for cabin (like an RV system)
Quoting: CabinBuilder I have read somewhere that lead-acid battery will withstand freezing temperature if it remains fully charged (i.e. hooked up to the solar panel/charger). Think of it as a car battery during winter and freezing temperatures - it performs well if car is periodically driven and battery is kept charged. I...

On a happier note, I just finished (except for rain protection) setting up one of those portable "briefcase" style solar panels (13 W) to keep a 12 v batt I've got powering my wireless repeater in a glade in the middle of the woods. The repeater d...

... (work), a fan, and the occasional small appliance with no problem. Thanks to all here. :-) I'm a total novice (except I've done a lot of wiring), so it was a challenge. I'm wondering if there are any solar geniuses out there that can answer a couple of questions I still haven't answered. For example, can I just walk away for a couple of weeks and not do anything m...
