Quoting: unixfmikeWhat can you actually power from this? I'm currently looking at solar systems under $1,000US and would like to know what your particular 30 watt system powers. Ultimately my goal is to provide power for the following : Real world usage for a famil...

...tchewan River here in Alberta. His parents live in the old farmhouse, and though there is electricity, gas, and water to the site, our cabin is off the grid. We are using a Honda 3000 generator and solar panels for electricity. There will be no running water, just a biffy out back. The cabin is 16 X 24, two bedrooms, on large living room/kitchen, and a loft. Heat w...

Kitchen sink plumbing direct connects thru wall to bath vanity. Solar lighting and charger for marine deep cycle batterys. Though I'm on the grid (refrigerator, beer), every short cut saves $'s. Tankless hot water (ebay) with a seasonal ...

... up in pairs to get 12 volts, but you can add as many pairs as you like to boost the amp hour capacity. I lived off grid for two years (full time) using four golf cart batteries charged by two 75watt solar panels and a 800watt wind charger. Power was adequate for my living quarters and a small workshop, although in the winter I needed to run a gas powered generator an ...

...ttach charger's connectors and screw caps back. Make sure you color match wiring connectors (i.e re2red, back2black). I did not have to add anything. Two other charge controller wires go to the solar panel. The dc auto connector on the Eliminator has current protection circuitry and should not be used for charging the battery. Hope this helps.

...t otherwise; the 12v system loses a lot of power through long wiring. Better to use an inverter to minimize the loss and be able to use regular household lighting and appliances. I just finished a solar system at my cabin 2 weeks ago and no longer need to deal with any of this. The total expenditure was less than $350 and relatively easy to install once you understand how it al...

Hello from Kelowna BC. We recently purchased our dream acreage in green wood BC about 2hrs south of Kelowna. When I read what you are using for solar power I just smiled, I have the exact same system that I hooked up this weekend, with a few variances. I decided to purchase the 30 amp battery controller offered at Can tire for 130...

...p-cycle batteries can be drained low and are better option for the cabin power use, but they are more expensive. If you store power box at your cabin during the winter, make sure it is hooked to the solar panel + charge controller and is charging – battery will withstand freezing temperatures if fully charged (think how lead-acid batteries are used in the car). Als...

Hey folks, I have a decent sized cabin off grid in P.E.I. Canada. I want to get electricity in it, and tried by getting three 15 watt solar panels and a power box to hook to em...however, my box seems to be screwed up. It wont charge up. I think I broke it by having it hooked up to the panel...

...scent light. In a small cabin 2 would work well and 4 may be overkill if 10.4 watts total can be described as such. I bought mine at Princess Auto in Ontario. About $9.00 each. I use two 15 watt solar panels and a single Canadian Tire bought 70 A.Hr marine type deep cycle battery for my set-up. The LED lights really make solar panel...

I am not an expert, but will try to tell you what we have. On the cabin we started with a small solar panel and two 6volt batteries in a series to make the necessary 12 volts. We then added two more batteries for additional backup. In the winter we don't get m...

...eries is an obvious way to extend service time. Also, batteries typically last several years - check the date when they where made and see if some need to be replaced. You may or may not need to add solar panels, depending on your usage pattern (i.e. is there enough time to recharge). As to hot water see this discussion on cabin hot water options. Enjoy your cabin!

I was also thinking about similar solar power setup at our cabin, but we intent to spend more time there so I'm planning to have more solar panels and batteries. I hope soon ...
