Been since last moose hunting season, September, since I've been out to the cabin. Had to get our new house finished and get my knee replaced.
The ice finally went off the lake we use to land on. I'm going to help my buddy with a super cub get the floats on the plane and fly out. Hopefully the bears didn't break in or eat the wheelers.
Plan on getting a new dock in. Little one with a board walk to avoid the water. Finally get the sand point well done Hopefully. Maybe do some TnG pine on the cieling upstairs. But I kinda want want to get some bear hunting in. Be nice to mix up so black bear bratwurst for the summer. And just get out mostly. Hopefully my beautiful wife n wonderful daughter and our grandson can fly out for a week or so. That would be a play week.
There is northern pike in the little pond out front now. So get the canoe out n get some. Be real nice to get a bunch of pike filets in the freezer. Hopefully we'll have the swans back. The wolves give the a hard time but they have a small island to nest on.
Take our daughter n grandson out n look for moose antlers that have dropped. We have daylight pretty much nonstop now so time doesn't matter. Sit on the front porch and sip some fresh perked coffee off the woodstove. Get some target practice in. Just spend the time enjoying our cabin together with our family. Living the dreams that drove me to want to build this.

Wow, long time away. I’m only a half hour from house to cabin but any more than a week is killing me, especially if I have projects awaiting like you.

Good luck with them and enjoying the place with your family!

Best of luck
!
I know the feeling of waiting… not near as long in MN but still almost half a year.

Enjoy! Like you said it what you built it for!

Thanks folks. I had to get a knee replaced in February so riding a snogo out last winter didn't work. Yeah my buddy with the little super cub stopped by yesterday. Visit about flying out to the cabin. He figures we can build the dock in a day. I told him that I would rather have the opportunity to harvest some black bears. Didn't take long to convince. Summer is coming so need to make some bratwurst up.
Biggest issue is the bears. The game board declared it emergency thing because tooooooo many bears. We can harvest 3 black bear and 2 brown per year. And wolves, have at em. They know exactly when we show up. They will leave a turd where the trail leaves the tioga n enters the bush. Right on a freight sled hauling a trailer has been stuck/stranded for 6-8 years. Nice equipment too. It wouldn't f it in the trail. And on the little trail to the pond.
I keep a bag of sunflower seeds at the cabin. The spruce hens will come in and hang out. Kinda like wild chickens. I knock the 4-5 foot grass down with a small log. Then the birds can get to the bugs. And kinda nice to see a bear coming when you step out. Last one I harvested I stepped out the door to throw out the coffee grounds in my cup. Always look around. Black bear next to the rear of the cabin. I stepped back in n asked beautiful wife if she wanted to harvest a black bear. She let me know that she hadn't finished her first cup of coffee. Nothing doing. Well I'd been up n had mine. Hey beautiful wife n wonderful daughter made brats.
Ya know. Having a remote cabin could be considered more work. Certainly things take longer. But freighting heavy loads behind a snogo. It's cold. The northern lights are dancing above. I'll stop in the open n turn the snogo off. Lay back n have a sip. Ponder life and dreaming about today. Or next couple weeks anyhows. Having more of our family together. Out in the middle of nowhere Alaska. Base of Mt McKinley and the Alaska range. Nothing but wild. There isn't another feeling like it. I've always been driving to hanging out in the bush. And when that little bush plane drops me off by myself. I will take a moment to listen to the quiet. When you can no longer hear the plane that's your only way out. If n when it can. Weather. It can. And I dig it. Hike 2 miles north with McKinley in front of me. Big. Looking hard to see if there are bears around or got into the cabin. Been OK so far. I built it so the windows are 7' off the ground. And the snow gets deep and digging down to get into the cabin isn't cool. There is holes in the back door knob where they bit holes in it.

Reads like that TV show I was hooked on for awhile, Mountain Men. Tough guys, and life up there. If I were just 50 years younger..

Good luck with the knee. I’m still hobbling around on my new hip.

Thanks. Got here near 45 years ago. Saw that mountain and wanted to climb it. Didn't get that chance but the dream to build a log cabin did. Was in the minus 30s below when we took a week to find where we staked and clear the lines for survey. No phone service so kinda risky. But just another day to.
I had what is now called a jiffy knee. Much less invasive. Doc comes in from the inside of the knee. Puts a jig on the ends of the bones n cuts out a spot for new parts. Takes like 40 minutes. I only did 6 weeks P T instead of traditional 12. Our family doc suggested it when I went in for my 2nd dose of steroid shot inside my knee for pain. I had to finish building our new home first. Just life.
I parked a 6 wheeler near the lake last fall after moose season. Only question is how much the bears thought it was a chew toy. They ate the key last time. Left it in the ignition. Had to hot wire it. I left the key for the generator shin the lock, bolted closed. Bear turned the key with its tongue and got in. There was old food stuff that had frozen n turned to mush or years outdated in a bucket in there that needed to be freighted out in the winter along with non burnables n such. Only thing it ate was all my 2 cycle and bar oil for the chainsaws. And the white gas I run through the coleman lanterns occasionally. Usually just use premium with additives. Keep it simple.
Had to have buddy bring out some gallon jugs of gas n oil in a tote. Don't tell the pilot though.

And with a new knee surgery waking 2 miles across toiga pillows probably ain't worth the risk. Although my beautiful wife has emergency insurance for me. And has tested the system personally. I managed to get the pilot we use and our wonderful daughter got me to the lake. Guess it works, cool.
I haven't worn a watch or carried a phone since I retired. Barely did before. So going out is different. I have an old waterproof phone that my staff used to tease me that 1980 called and wanted it's phone back. I take it out. Can send text or get so intermittent net when a satellite goes over. Or get east of the cabin a bit. I keep it in my ditty bag that is always with me in the bush. I like living.
And trying to figure out how to build things. By yourself. And have what you need to make it work.
Guess it's kinda obvious I'm excited. Can't stop thinking about it. Hey if I can get out there to the lake I'll make it. And hopefully the other wheelers aren't ate.
