I had a 16x40 shed delivered... I know, mistake #1. It came with 5/8 Lp smart side (not a fan). It was delivered without any house wrap under the siding. I was thinking of using #30 felt or house wrap and apply it over the smart side and cover with 4x8 RR, 12" wide T1-11. I added a 10 ft. overhang all around the cabin to keep it as dry as possible. I live in North Carolina where the summers are hot and humid and the winter is usually mild. I ordered my windows and they will be here in two weeks.... so I need to make up my mind and decide on new siding or leave it alone. What do you guy's/gal's think.

I would just leave it. Lots of older houses without house wrap. We have an 80s home with buffalo board for sheathing- no house wrap. Was it put on correctly and does it look nice and tight?
I’d think about it like this: option A you re-do it now. Option b you redo it later if it’s leaky. I’d give it a while to see if it’s even necessary to do option b. It’s the same amount of work either way , so why redo it if it’s not going to be an issue. A little water intrustion won’t hurt anything structurally if you have to redo later. Maybe have to replace some osb… but that’s about it.
My .02- hope this helps.

The siding is in excellent shape. They say 50 year warranty. I just don't like the look of LP smart side siding. Like I said it has a 10 ft. extended roof all the way around it. I just keep reading articles about you need house wrap or you will have problems. After the $$ I just spent on windows the smart side siding probably needs to remain in place. Here's a pic.

It doesn't look like you need it for a weather resistive barrier. It was sheet material, how much air leakage is there and can you take care of any problems at the edges/seams? If so, you're really done with what the WRB, weather resistive barrier, was doing.

House wrap's primary purpose is to prevent water intrusion. You have a 10-foot overhang around the entire cabin - ain't no water gonna intrude! Otherwise, use a dehumidifier to take any interior moisture out of the air if needed, which you'll likely already have in the form of an AC unit. If there's a 50-year warranty on the siding, I wouldn't mess with it.

I wasn't worried about rain actually hitting the cabin with a 10 ft. overhang. Just wasn't sure with moisture in the air some how could penetrate behind the siding?Last week we had several days of foggy, misty weather and it has bothered me that there wasn't a wrb behind the siding. I guess researching on the internet "do I need a wrb behind the siding" and all returned searches were doom and gloom, if I didn't have it, made me very uncomfortable. I'm glad I reached out to this forum. I'm not going to worry about it and put the money towards a mini split. Thanks a bunch!

Quoting: itsadamnshame put the money towards a mini split. Thanks They are great. We have a 120v 12kbtu in our 2 story 20x32 cabin. It works well. I also just put a 18k 240v 20x30 cottage we rent out. It's a bit over sized but will be a full time residence. The ability to lower btu output/power draw is great. I put both in my self.

Quoting: Brettny They are great Right now we are using a window air conditioner and a small Jotul wood stove. Both are doing a fine job. But I want to remove the window unit and have the mini split for heat, if we aren't at the cabin. I'm looking at a Daiken if my brother in laws friend installs it or perhaps a Mr. cool if I diy. What's your advice?

I know people that have both. They both work well. I have a vacuum pump and set of gauges so didnt go Mrcool. I also dont see much of a difference in the $700 one vs the $1400 one so just got the cheapest one I could find. We have a costway and totsot. For the cost of a vacuume pump and gauge set you can buy the tools and the cheaper unit for less than the more costly ones. You will also have a really good start on the tools to do any repairs if needed.

I did my own Mr. Cool unit here in NC foothills. Just took my time and it was pretty easy. Also our shed/ cabin doesn't have house wrap and it feels fine, i just used craft face insulation in walls, floor was sprayed at factory.

I can get a Mr. Cool from Costco for $1800 12k or $2300 for a 1800k. My brother in law has a HVAC guy that will install a Daiken for either $3000 or $3500 I forgot what size. I tried to get the shed dealer to house wrap/ insulate under the cabin with no prevail. I insulated the walls with rock wool and the ceiling with the pink stuff.

I paid $850 for a 18kbtu. And $600 for a 12kbtu. I thought the mrcool and dakin units where alot cheaper than that. Wow there pricy. Even a solar eg4 unit is cheaper than that.
Vacpump is $150ish, $100 for a set of gauges and a 5/16 to 3/8 adapter $20. I got my 18k placed and in a vacuum in 1hr. That includes prepping the pad for the outdoor unit. Then while in a vac I ran the power. No drop in vac after about 3hrs. Then just crack the valves open and let her rip.

I agree with Brett, I recommend you try and tackle the AC yourself. You will get much more unit for way cheaper and be left with tools that allow you to do other ACs (even cars). Its an easy afternoon job.
We opted for a Senville unit and have been super happy with it. Ours is the 18K and works excellent ($999). If you are looking for meat locker type cold you can bump up to the 24K for only a couple hundred more($1199).
Just an FYI, a ton of these off brand units are pretty much all the same. Same units, just different stickers. You can even swap remotes between them.
As to the siding.. I would leave the smart side on, but pick a high end stain to finish it. Changing up the siding color and trim color can really enhance the look of smartside.

One other thought.. Look on Facebook Martketplace or Craigslist for a used pump and gauges. Often people buy them for a single AC install and then sell them off at half of what they paid.

I did like Brett did. Got the AC kit with the pump, gauges and leak detector. Unfortunately the first unit was wrecked by Fed Ex. The driver was flipping the outside unit end over end when I walked up to the truck. I contacted the seller and they sent me a new outside unit when I sent them pics of the bashed up box. They let me keep the old one, so I guess I got extra parts if needed. Anyhoos I got it up and running, and am very happy with how well it works.
