Ok.. I know there are some Alaskan cabin owners here that must deal with the same thing. Flies.. soooooo many flies...

We haven't been to the cabin in 6 weeks and when we arrived today there was a 1 fly thick layer of dead flies EVERYWHERE. As gross as it sounds, its not uncommon for cabin owners around here to have this issue (even home owners). Black flies in the fall and spring is just the norm here.

What I can't figure out is how they get in. We sealed the living crap out of this building when we built it. The only thing I can think of is the windows. They are absolutely getting behind the screens as I see tons between the screen and window. I'm guessing they are somehow getting through the closed window seals. I plan to seal off the windows using plastic shrink film in the spring. That way I can see how many are actually coming through the windows.

However, I'm sure you smart fellas could suggest other places they may be getting in! Suggestions?

Ironic. We don't have a ton of them here but two or three will come in the cabin door if left open. Thought I had flypaper but cant find it. Stopped at both HF and Dollar Plus, don't carry it. Never seemed to work that well anyway. I have a small usb zapper, rare day when it gets one.

Sounds like cluster flies, look that name up for control ideas. It also sounds like they are not only coming in, they are home, eggs, the whole life cycle can move into the cracks and crevices with you. Log homes are notorious but we also had trouble with a house that had a huge stone dry stack look chimney and fireplace, it was a high rise development for them.

I have flys in my cabin every fall-spring. When I warm it up they all come out. I have found sticky window traps on each window really help. It's been 2yrs and the population is slowly going down. I also vac up all the live ones I can when I'm there.

I don't love this idea... but, I've done it twice over the 10 years in our cabin:

Bug bomb. Each time I did it, I had dramatically fewer flies for a couple of years

I only did it on the 2nd floor (where most of the flies and wasps are). So not directly near the kitchen area

Thanks everyone..

We have put up removable plastic on the insides of our windows. We will see how that works. I'm pretty sure that %99 are getting in through the windows.

I like the bug bomb suggestion. I'm not above chemical warfare. I also use the vac to suck the suckers up.

I think once they get in they multiply and hide in many places. I dont believe all the ones you see come in from outside.
