I have a generator with a 10 hp motor. Sometimes its hard on the fingers to pull start it. I took a leftover handle from exercise bands, and easily looped the cord thru the D ring. Now it's a lot easier on the fingers to pull start it. Its kinda like those D handles you can buy.

Excellent! I have the same problem. Give this old dog a half hearted pull and it rips fingers off on backfire.

Have you guys tried adjusting the valves?
I had a new champion inverter generator that you almost couldnt pull, even going slow. The electric start was useless. Unit had 90hrs when this started. Adjusted the valves and it's been totaly fine. At 260hrs now.

Checking the valves is a good idea to start with.
However, some units just suck. Most have a decompression device on the camshaft and when it doesn't work right you get a finger ripper. They are all pretty similar and involve a swinging ramp with a pin that holds the valve slightly open until a certain RPM. Numerous things can cause them not to work right (bad machining, dirty, metal flakes from casting, ect). Sometimes they wear in and get better, but sometimes they just suck forever.

My auto-comp release wore out on my B&S lawn tractor engine, the little bat had a hard time spinning it. I found if I hand turned it to just past tdc on the comp stoke (like kick starting an old HD) the engine inertia on initial spin would make it go fine.

Wouldn't hurt to check the valves, but I think my old Kung Fu grip is more of the problem. Lol One of the best things about this hack is you can easily remove the handle and use it on chainsaws, mini bikes, go karts etc. with no damage on the pull cord.

Interesting. Mine seems to have high compression no matter how slow you turn it over. No e start. It’s old been here since the cabin build. No idea of brand or spec, decals long gone. But it starts one strong pull every time. Hate to mess with it, I seem to have the brown thumb with generators lately. Gave the dead Mightyquip away, Onan still sitting here dead. Luckily the Generac for the well pump alive and well, couple others still in backup.
