I am new to this site. It seems that I am among like-minded people. My place is in the Highlands of Scotland and I've moved there after 14 years as a gasification engineer, in academia and freelance. The site currently has no utility connections, but it has a disused well that the locals tell me was once the best in the area. I'm getting away from bills, digital surveillance, dirty air, 5G, urban sprawl, broken societies, antagonisms from a world based on competition, light pollution, assault from traffic noise, vile treatment of animals, etc. In short, when the state and its senior partners - the banks, media and consumer sector - reach out for me, I want them to find that I've ducked.

My cabin is in the Olympic Rainforest of Washington state, on the edge of a 40' cliff, next to a seasonal waterfall, overlooking a river, surrounded by hundreds of acres of public trust land. I built my cabin myself, carrying all the materials by hand to the site. I even had to build my driveway myself, digging out tree stumps, leveling the area, and hauling in a couple truck loads of gravel.
I have no experience; have never done anything like this before. I've made lots of mistakes, one trip to the ER (so far!), but I'm having lots of fun and learning a lot. I spend every weekend there, and there's always something to do. It's my refuge. I love listening to the rain on the roof and the roar of the waterfall and sitting on my front deck watching wildlife on sunny summer days. It's my happy place.
Electric and phone are 100' away. At some point, I'll have them run to my cabin so I can spend more time away from the city working from home. Until then, I don't even have cell phone service, which is awesome! My little cabin in the woods
