I love to work with wood not good at all but love to do some carving when I have time. This one isn't finished yet but pick it up from time to time and do a little more.

Wow that is great! What kind of special tools do you use?

I really think it would be cool to incorporate carvings into the cabin like porch posts or loft railings.

I have carved for many years and start projects and lay them down then pick them up years later. I have a wolf I have had on my work bench for about 3 years now. Someday I need to finish that one. As for tools I use a knife and that is about it. I don't have any chisels or gouges. I should order some tools for just carving but never have. I just use a simple sharp knife and that is it. They are nothing special just fun to do when I get inspired to work on them. I make wood clocks also. I have made many of them and give them all away. I had a guy 2 weeks ago that wanted one for his wife so I gave him one. I won't take any money for my work it is fun to give them away. I do tell the people that I give them to if they ever want to get rid of them that I want them back so I can give them to someone else. I will post a picture of a clock that have done.

Here is a clock that I have done. All are differant in their own way. I always use simple tools and these clocks where done the old fashion way. Hand saw and wood file. All rounded edges are just filed and these clocks are made from old pallets that people throw away. There is some great wood in these old pallets.

 Neb,
You do wonderful work!!!!! Both the carving and the clock is amazing! I never would have guessed that the clock was old pallet wood!!! I would love to have a carving like that into a post like aktundra said!! Do you have any of your carvings at your cabin? It is a really cool hobby and I bet very relaxing for you too.

Neb that clock is AMAZING! And built out of pallets?!?!?!?!?! WOW! I am very jealous! Since I was a kid I've always wanted to have a big, carved totem pole! hahahaha....That's never going to happen, but I am just amazed at how someone can take a piece of plain wood and turn it into something so beautiful!!!

I don't have any at the cabin I will take one up there this weekend that you reminded me to do so. I plan on going there and will take some work with me to do while I'm there. Like I said I start these projects and I go to them when I'm inspired to work on them. Thanks for the kind words.

The cabin would be a wonderful place to get inspired. I totally admire your carving skills and I think it is really cool that you give your clocks away to friends. I'm sure they appreciate the workmanship you put into them!

Here are few more that I have laying around. I do them mostly when I'm at the shack. I pick up wood on the river and carve while I'm fishing and most times it doesn't work that good. As soon as I get carving then I get a bite and so forth. It is usually a circus!!!!

I had some time and I got two done last week. I have about 10 to 12 hours in each one. A few hours after work and worked on them on Sat, and varnished them Sunday. I never thought about selling them but I'm sure I could if I got them in the right place. Not sure what they would sell for. I have looked at professional carvings and they do go for a lot of money. The big thing for me is to find the right piece of wood to do a project. I see a piece of wood laying around and I imagine what I could do with it. This wood is a hollowed out piece of cottonwood. I used this wood log to sit on while fishing most of the summer and finally started to look at it and knew what I was doing to do with this wood. LOL Need to find the right wood with character to it for me to do a project.

Very nice!! I've done a bit of wood working myself (wooden toys mostly) but not much in the way of carving. I use clay and other types of sculpture for that.

Do you burnish it afterwards? I see the propane tanks. The finishing is nice too.

No I don't burn just the way the wood is. I oil and varnish and the tanks are from a heater. If I leave them in the garage they smell with temp change so I just leave them outside.

This used to be my hobby and after much encouragement it became a second job. I'm curtailing how much time I spend "working" at this second job because it cuts into my trout fishing time which is my time to decompress from my first 45-50 hour a week job. It is all very confusing! LOL!

They look very nice!!! That can be a problem a hobby turning into a job then the fun stops. When I can't have fun and enjoy myself then I find something else to do. I have people all the time I want one of those I want one these and then you could go full time job and I don't want that. I had someone ask me the other day if they could buy one of my craving and they wanted to raffle it of for a political function and I told them no. I will give them away for a good cuase if the money can help someone or a benifit thing to help people out. Anyway looks very nice and yes hobbys can turn in to a full time job in a hurry.LOL
