My land is not hooked to the grid right now and I've always thought about ways to hook up a web camera to the property. My title says security, but it is more from a want to just tune in and see the trees every once in awhile. I'd like to be able to see what the weather is doing or how the creek is flowing. I have a stream, so was thinking I could power it with microhydro. But, I just don't know what other logistics and expense there would be. The park service employs these types of cameras, so it is obviously doable. I just won't do it if there is a huge expense. Does anyone out there have any ideas or experience with it?

I'm sorry you haven't gotten any responses because I'd like to know about this too. My parcel is off grid but I have good cel phone reception. Seems like there would have to be grid power or a solar setup to make it work.

Any idea how the park service does this off grid, if at all?

A lot of folks are using Game Cameras for security. Here is a link that might be helpful. I have no experience with this but might be an option.

the problem with web cams is power. I have a 4 camera system that I used intermittently when I had a problem. It's now for sale.

my system drew 80 watts/hr. x 24 hrs. You begin to see the problem.

If you buy a game cam get a good one. I've been through 3 that just plain failed.

I thought there were some game cams that had 3g in them, so they can send you pics from time to time?

Seems like you have to subscribe to their service, though. Not sure, perhaps there are other options.

A more inventive person might be willing to buy an Arduino or Raspberry Pi microcontroller, a camera and cellular radio module, and rig something up themselves that would use a fraction of the power and not require any subscription fees, but it would be more involved to get going...you'd still need a 3g data plan also, so there would still be an ongoing monthly fee.

Food for thought!

Here's a cellular solution, but it's not cheap.

There is a discussion about this and general security on this post -

Personally I use a game camera, but I don't have access to the camera when I'm not on site.

I have power, but no internet, well...I installed WildBlue/Exede satellite internet service and I have 6 Foscam cameras. It's probably overkill just to take a look back at your property, but in addition to camera surveillance on my cabin, I do use the internet access while I'm at the cabin to watch YouTube videos to learn lots of activities like processing venison, proper shooting techniques, how to lure coyote, shopping on Amazon, and most importantly reading the forums at small-cabin.com. Another side benefit is that it makes up for not having phone service (and very poor cell service). Though you'd think that satellite internet service wouldn't be fast or have too much latency for video communication, Apple's Facetime works like a champ. Perfect video and audio. Not sure how they got that to work so well over satellite internet.

just remembered a security camera called Reconyx.com It appears to have built-in cellular capability and it can transmit images to your cell phone or email.

Saw this in the local paper. You would still need power and internet but offers a few features that may interest some people.
