Many of us enjoy using our cabins for hunting season. A great place to bring family and friends together. And build lasting positive memories.
We have hunting season starting in a couple days. I will be focusing on moose for my family. But lots of black bears that have been feeding on blueberries. I have had wolves come in to check out an opportunity while I’m doing cow moose in heat calls. A huge pure white one a couple years ago. Was with son doing calls and we heard 2 wolves making a drive . One on each side of a ridge that our cabin is at. Making what sounded like a chirping sound to me.
And the night I got back to the cabin after dark. I like to stay until it gets dark. Lots of things happen near that time as critters are active. Strap on a headlamp n walk home. Beautiful wife has nice hot dinner ready. Fill up belly n head upstairs to bed. Just get settled in beautiful wife says she hears something.
We opened the door and layer silently while a pack of wolves took down a moose. Like within a couple hundred yards from the front door. The party continued the next morning.
Certainly the best story so far is being with my son when he harvested his first moose. And being able to teach him the different types of calls and when and how to use them. When that huge bull , I estimated him at near 1300-1400 pounds, was responding, he didn’t want to step out into the open near a small pond. Steps out n steps back. A blast of cow in heat moans and he steps out. We watch as continues to move forward towards us. Head down in a defensive posture. Antlers swaying as he took each step. Along with a low vocal grunt. Ugh Ugh. I could tell he was nervous. He was several hundred yards out when he first appeared. At 75 yards or so he stops. Lifts his huge head and sniffs the air with his lips. He didn’t get big being stupid. And he ain’t seeing any ladies.
I tell my son to ready. As he slowly turns to exit stage
left , my son harvests his first moose. My family is very familiar with processing our food. Watching my son , daughter, grandson, beautiful wife processing. Testing new sausage recipes. Filling our freezers with over 500 pounds of packaged meat. Canning a black bear I
harvested.
Picture of a proud dad. Remember take one make one !

I have so many great memories hunting with my dad. I now process my own deer, make jerky and sausage. Such fulfillment from it. Just have deer and hogs on my lease down here in Texas.
Yukon moose is my biggest dream, and hopefully someday I'll be able to go on a hunt for one.

Well
My best hunting story was while I was up on a ladder stand. All the sudden I'm hearing this loud rumble through the woods of trees crashing. The sound is getting ever closer to me. A bear?

No, four cows charging through the woods at full gallop. the worse of this is they are headed right for me. If they know this ladder down I'm screwed so I climb up into tree. Luckily they pass by ladder without taking it out so I have a means down other than roping myself.

I figure with all that racket hunting is on pause for a while and someone must be looking for these cows. I get out to the road and there a guy on an ATV with his head twisting all around. I say I'm betting you're looking for some cows. Why yes
Well, I know where they are.

I’m heading out for moose hunting season with my son. Beautiful wife may swap out with son after a week and daughter and family hopefully after that followed by a week or so with a long time friend . Might even be blessed and harvest a moose.

Spent the last week at camp. Brushed out trees across trails. cut some fire wood. Told and retold old hunting stories , from years back. Recalled some of the ones that were no longer with us. Will hunt deer and bear , the next two weeks. Really looking forward to it. Been cooped up , all summer. old243

Good luck old. When I’m out at the cabin hunting I think I spend as much time working around the cabin as I do out hunting. But it’s all good though. I believe that when it comes to hunting, just getting out is a win. Harvesting game is just more icing on the cake.
One of the best things about cabins is bringing folks together around a fire . And you’re probably already in good hunting country right from the front porch.
We’ve been in the minus zero temperatures so I’m looking forward to ice fishing. We have a caribou hunt going on just north of us that my BIL wants me to go with him on. He has not hunted caribou.
A trick I have used on caribou is wavering a white cloth. It’s easy to spot from a distance against the green and I believe they think it’s other caribou tails butts. And they tend to be herd animals.
A different brother in law n me were out caribou hunting. I had harvested a nice bull . We had the morning to hunt then had to head to the house after several days out. We get to the top of a plateau n there’s a small yearling. It’s that or nothing it seems. Fish n game has asked for hunters to harvest surplus cows n calves. After the report, a half dozen caribou appear. Had one standing on his rear legs trying to see us better. A great hunt I still remember from near 40 years ago.
BTW, caribou meat is really tender n good.

Sorry Sparky, no Yukon Moose this year. We did manage to harvest a Yukon Bison on Sunday which was the first day off the season.

Thanks AK. We were pretty stocked. Glad we left Sunday night as we received about a 30" of snow overnight and it would have been very interesting trying to get out of the bush in the side by side.

First time I did not go moose hunting in more years than I want to say! All good thing must end . Got to the point I was not caring my weight . It was time, but I will never forget the great times I had in the Bush nothing like it!!! My best story’s are in my head not likely to ever leave .
