A borate solution such as Timbor Wood Treatment.

Penetreat, mix in a little borax from the supermarket. Pentreat is available at http://www.loghelp.com.

Motor oil works fine, but that is getting to be a bit old school and, maybe, not too friendly on the environment. However, I have an old log swing that I coated with new motor oil about 15years back. The swing is in contact with the ground and exposed to the weather. The wood is still sound.

If it will be a while before you use your logs and you are storing them with the bark on. Spray them down with a little diesel, it will keep the bugs out till you peel the logs and put them logs to use.

Used oil was at one time quite common. These days, we have figured out that all the metals that are contained in the burnt oil are really bad for people. Wouldn't use burnt oil on the inside.

Jasco, but you said logs, is this a log cabin? I dont think "green" Jasco would be the ticket.
