I’m building a 12’ x 20’ (with attached deck) SaltBox cabin. Looking at the plans that I bought online and scrolling through the reviews for the plans I realize that the floor joist are going the length of the cabin, but I want the skids to go the length of the cabin (24’) and the joist to go perpendicular to the skids. So I’ve sketched out a new floor plan with the corrected placement of the joist (that includes the deck). My question is how many (12”) concrete piers will I need? The original plans has 20 concrete piers which seems like overkill.

Those 'plans' may not be real engineered drawings.
How about showing us what the plans are for the deck for some analysis?
Fwiw, we have a prebuilt log cabin, 12x28, with the real skids the long way (they are skids because it is a prebuilt). The 18 concrete silo staves, 9 per side, make a floating foundation under the skids, all on about 18" of Compacted crushed limestone.
The joists span the 12' span with no center support.
You have to size skids/beams, joists, etc for the load and span. The joists must be at least the min for the span or you will have a bouncy floor
If those drawings are not properly done the sizing may be wrong.
And remember, you start the build from the bottom, that is No place to compromise. This means even the sizing and depth of the piers for the soil type you have.

You could prob run 4 sono tubes along a 24' girder. I would use a tripple beam for this. For instance 2x10. I would do 8',16' and 8' pattern on the girder. Then every break/joint in the girder would be over a sono tube. You could also source 24' lumber.

Also pull the sono tube in from the edge of the building 10in if useing 2x10s. I also also use PT lumber for this.

Id probably go back in this forum and look at what a fellow who built cabins built. Gary O. Used skids as in skid on the ground. Just me but I would describe the beams as girders that span the piers with floor joists on top.
Crushed compacted gravel with cement pavers in it that the skids would set on . Use a piece of aww wood between the pavers n skids to help prevent them from setting on wet surfaces. Folks have used things like shingles too.
Anyhows just another way to go about how you can build. And some great information about building on skids and how the finished cabins look if you look back a few years.
Mostly id suggest trying to have fun. Nice to be able to enjoy your experience. And most importantly. If you want something get or do it. Not nice looking back n thinking you wish you did something differently. Good luck n have fun
