Hello everyone! I live in a log home we built 45 years ago, and still living here at 58 years old. Im building my wife a log sauna, and am completely winging it! The front door, my wife ordered these fancy surface mount hinges, and im trying to figure out how to mount the door to where it will open all the way without hitting the vertical log jamb. I have a few ways to accomplish it, but am concerned about the appearance. I thought about letting in the hinge on the vertical log, but then padding it out at each hinge with blocks of wood, but i dont think it'll look very good. I'll include some photos....

Better view here... the door needs to sit inside the flat plane of the vertical log, but swing outward, and clear the radius of the log without breaking or bending the hinges 20250728_184410.jpg

Here are the surface mount hinges my wife ordered. I'm only going to use 3 of them. They measure about 8 inches in length Resized_Screenshot_2.jpeg

Nice looking build but I just don’t think those are the right hinges for your situation

They showed up yesterday and I agree. The hinges aren't tight at the pivot like a regular hinge is, but they are heftier than they look in the photo. Still trying to convince my wife.... ??

Sure underscores the 'designer' needs to coordinate with the 'builder'

Can you add something like a 2-by to the hinge-side of the vertical log and attach the hinges to that so the door has some more clearance from the vertical log on the outswing? Maybe even add another 2-by to the opposite vertical log for a symmetrical appearance? Sort of like re-frame the door? Or, if you move the pivot-point of the hinges to the very front edge of the flat plane, won't that give you enough clearance on the outswing?

That's sort of what I did. I moved the door out as far as I could and I've already got a wood box i built, that will sit on the deck to the left of the door and act as a door stop. 20250809_194034.jpg

I see notches cut in the vertical log to accept the hinge plates. What about extend that notch the full height of the log?
