This is a good video explaining how load distribution changes and how beams and columns react in response to whether your joists and beams are simply supported, running just from one support over to another. Or, whether the beams and joists are continuous, running over 3 or more supports.

With his concrete slab demonstration, think about a wood floor system with a series of piers with girders that run from pier to pier and joist that run acros from one girder to the next one. Then another floor system where the girders are built up to act as continuous beams under continuous joists that run perpendicular above the 3 rows of girders. Notice with that change in how it is framed, the load on some piers and their footings changes about 40%. (another moral of the story as i watched how much pier loads can change, don't skimp on footing size)
