Greetings all;
Am in the planning stages of building a 12'X12' cabin. I can't go larger cause of zoning - the footprint must be less than 150 Square Feet but I can go as high as 35'! That would be crazy, but can I go to 18' high? I'm thinking I would like to have a raised loft area, so the cabin would basically be 1 and 1/2 stories. I'm asking this in regards to structural integrity & engineering POV. any help, past experiences or suggestions appreciated.
Thanks!
DG

18' should not be a problem. This tower is 10' by 10':

Is this your cabin? must have awesome views!
Is that a solar system on the roof? That would be my next step after the cabin and privy.

No, I'm still planning mine. You are right about the solar system...that is in fact the owners' power shed, and my guess is they made it that tall to keep the panels in the sun longer.

If you wanted to use the appropriate footings, posts and engineered beams, you could technically go as high as you wanted..... real footings may not be allowed in your area and it depends on the visibility of your lot...

Usually anything over 20 feet high needs a variance.
