So here's our newly acquired cabin, sitting on 185 acres of mature mixed hardwood and softwood stands - the true Acadian forest! This is a managed woodlot and we will eventually be harvesting trees selectively, but for now, we want to use it on weekends as a recreational property. It is only a few minutes away from our house so we can easily check on it pretty regularly. We are in the process of securing the property against thieves and vandals (many cameras scattered throughout) and will soon begin to work on the cabin. It needs to be gutted completely. It was pretty much left to rot over the last 5 years, except for the occasional squatter. Here are the steps that we plan on taking:

1 - replace beams under cabin (in the next two weeks or so)
2 - install steel roof panels
3 - remove interior walls, insulation, etc.

Once we are down to bare bones, we will be able to determine what we are dealing with, but we have reason to believe (and two construction experts' opinions) that the "bones" of the structure are fine. We hope to have it useable by fall.

We will do all of this ourselves, with help from above-quoted construction experts when necessary. We hope to re-do the interior with milled boards taken off the land. The interior is only 10 x 20 so we plan on installing bunk beds on one side, a futon on the other and replacing the cooking stove with a very small wood stove.

Our long-term plans? To screen in the lean-to portion and install a deck floor so we can use it as a seasonal cooking/eating area, to build a deck coming out the front, as wide as the whole cabin (including the lean-to) and hopefully, to spend many years enjoying it! We have no plans to wire it or to have running water - we use the stream next to the camp (see photo) to keep our beverages and food cool (in a dry bag) and we know there are several springs on the property so once we locate them, we will have drinking water.

Would very much like to hear your thoughts and suggestions on this huge project!

White pine and water, just like Northern MN, nice. Are you keeping the cookstove? We'd like one in an outdoor kitchen.

No, we are getting rid of the cookstove a) because there is a panel at the back that is busted, probably rendering it useless and b) because it's too big and takes up precious space in our small cabin. We can make do with a coal BBQ and a Coleman stove and can always use the smaller wood stove to heat water. We only expect to use the camp occasionally on weekends since our house is only about 30 minutes away door to door.
