Just wondering what the most commonly used method is for creating a beam for the top of a 6x6 post is?
If the 6x6 post is actual size 5.5"x5.5" and for example someone builds up a beam of three 2x lumber then the beams actual thickness is 4.5"
I've read a few posts using a 1" plywood spacer along the entire beam but is this they way to go?
Can you add the 1" extra to just the area at the top of the post?
Is there a better way without using plywood?
Thanks
Jim

What I have seen is cut a notch (like h) in the top of the 6x6 so your beam fits and use two lag bolts w/ washers on each end.

Simpson strong ties make a number of post caps for this and similar.
Post Cap
is an example.

This is the way to go. I've seen those but I didn't realize one half was sized for three 2x's. thought it was 5.5" on both ends.
thanks!
