I am looking for cabin plans for a single story 16 x 24 structure. There seem to be plenty of options on the web, but I wondered whether anyone had any specific recommendations. Thanks. K

Check out www.countryplans.com. They are intended for owner-builders, the prices are cheap and they have good after-sales support.
Another option is the "Weekend Warrior" series from Robinson Residential Design, which consists of 16' by 25' modules that can be combined in different ways. Also aimed at the owner-builder but a bit pricier. htt

On my 8x12 cabin (no permit needed) how tall may I build?
Modoc County tells me I need building permits to bring in electricity, if I make my own juice do I need permits??

I'd suspect most places let you go up 20 feet before a special permit is needed. As for juice, why not have power brought in to just a power pole with a small panel and outlet, like an RV set up, then you can run a sub-panel off that inside your cabin. Electricity and no permit.

Each county may be a little different. For example Stokes County, NC allows a 12x12x12 structure to be built without permit on any parcel greater than 5 acres, but a permit is required for any size structure put on a lot less than 5 acres. Checking with your county permit/zoning/health department up front will ensure you don't get into a mess down the road.
