I always take a 5 gallon jug of drinking water to the camp. I just thought about sanitizing my jug. I fill it with municipal water that is treated with chlorine. Is that sufficient or do I need to clean the jug with bleach? Thanks

I just rinse the jugs with hot water before filling them (with well water, not chlorinated city water).
If I'm bringing water to leave for an extended time (during the winter when I'm not there as often), I'll buy new jugs of spring water.

If you're trying to truly sanitize it, use bleach or even just dish soap. If you use bleach, make sure it's properly diluted (but still effective).

Washing the container with warm soapy water using a brush that may be inserted has worked for us for decades, both for water carrying and beer or wine making. Soaking for an hour or two with a solution of water and Oxy-Clean helps clean out the post-brewing debris. There are long handled brushes made specifically for washing out 5 gallon carboys that are used for wine and beer making. Home brewer supply stores and Amazon have the brushes.

I have 5gal jugs that I fill with my well water. I may rinse them every few trips but almost never soap anymore. I have 7 and only use maybe 2 a trip so loose track of what ones where washed. I have LCI military jugs and let them freeze all winter and have for about 5yrs. Not one issue with them. They where about $23 new about 7yrs ago.

I have about 10 jugs in rotation, at the filling station I give them a quick rinse. Usually bring a couple home at the end of a trip and those I will give a bleach rinse before refilling, but I don't keep track of jugs so who knows how long some have went. As long as they aren't in the sun, water doesn't really go bad.

We dont have potable at cabin but pick up such at a city maintained & tested artesian well en-route. The cabin has a 2.5gal ss jug and our normal refill jug is an old 2.5gal Coleman. About every other cabin trip we get fresh water and the 'old' in the ss gets relegated to a utility jug for dishwashing, etc.
Usually the ss gets a hot soapy dishwater scrub out a couple times a season. The Coleman jug gets dried well in the sun on the front steps and never left wet inside. It gets a fresh water quick rinse before each filling. It gets the scrub out in the spring and whenever I feel like it in season.
We have been doing it like this for about 40yrs, no issues yet.
