Looking for a very low power air conditioner, I tried and failed with two recent "low power" air conditioners which I opted for when the cost of my pit "Ground Source" AC went nuts on the cost scale....then like the creeping flatulence after eating Van Camps Beans...it hit me....I had the cool air source right under my feet, I have even installed the insulated skirting so air and critters could not go under the cabin when I designed it and I also had sand for soil which is a terrible conductor of heat and cold, SO I have this continual pocket of cool air right under my feet AND I had built (but not used for two years) an insulated divider curtain to compartmentalize the cabin, heating and cooling only the area you need....I had actually forgotten about it.

So I measured out the 3 inch hole I would need to cut in the floor, already had the fan I use for everything (which moves a lot of air yet is super low energy USB powered), and took the leap and cut the hole....first thing I felt was a rush of cold air....without the fan!

Next step was to try the fan which looks to be ideal for the job thus far...next thing to do is keep tabs on under the house temps to see how well it recharges itself and being a rather poor gardener letting the vegitation grow at the base of the house which provides a further insulating barrier to under house infiltration, and that is well on its way this season!

Ultimately I need only four hours of cooling on the hottest days, need it only in 1/2 the cabin and everything less the 3 inch hole in the floor was already in place....now only time will tell!

As Hannibal said on the A-Team..."I love it when a plan comes together"!

One thing that was hard to miss when I was in the hole for my outhouse pit was the cold, cold rocks and boulders. They act like a sink and absorb coolness from the ground and hold it. Like, forever.

If you find that you're not able to replenish that cool air underfoot maybe introducing a large mass such as boulders will help retain the cold better.

 Just thinkin' out loud here...

somehow I don't think I would have been focusing on the temperature in that situation.

yuk yuk yuk. You guys think you're so funny.
Well, this isn't my first trip to the woods. I know my way around (and down) an outhouse.
 Rocks are cold.
 Poop is warm.
 And I use a ladder.
 So there!

I am the king of self-deprecation, besides, I'm so clever that sometimes I don't understand a single word of what I am saying.

So do you mean you are capable of bull****ing people with meaningless nonsense? You can make a lot of money doing that.

Back to the O.T. Groingo, I understand where you are going with your cooling efforts but your ideas raises a flag for me. I'm sensitive to molds & mildews, so whenever I hit a damp musty spot, I feel it deep in my chest... Are you not concerned about introducing mold spores into your cabin ? or the effects that various types of molds can have on you ? Did you know that some mold spores can create permanent lung injuries and potentially even worse.... believe me when I say, that is something you absolutely wish to avoid at all costs.

I really would not want to hear from you 6 months down the road saying you have some dastardly pulmonary infections or something like that.

There are no signs of mold on any of the framing or odors mainly because under my cabin it has not seen any direct moisture or light since I built it five years ago.
Bone dry under there because of the sandy soil.
Anything feels hinky I'll be all over it.
