This is probably a bad idea but..
I have a pile of rocks I need to move. Don't really know what to use them for, some kind of rock fountain maybe? What else?
Ordered a thumb for the backhoe, be here next week. Thought maybe I'd put the 2 footers along the side of my driveway, maybe 10' apart, on the downward side, as sort of a guardrail. Be OK to knock one down the hill if it saved a vehicle from going over. It's a pretty steep driveway, about 30%, can't tell from photo. And going over the side is a rollover situation for sure. 20210701_175324.jpg

I ran a line of Boulders along my driveway som are 4-5' in diameter.. twas done when I was getting the build site excavated. Lesson Learned, put at least 3' between the side of driveway & rocks.
If your subject to snow, remember that the rocks will play the Snow Fence game of their own, so think about that, otherwise you may be inviting snow drifts onto the driveway.

No snow but good tip on spacing between the edge. Thanks.

I have a P shaped driveway. The circle in the P became smaller and smaller every year until I put rocks there...amazingly no o e has even bumped one, there about 1ft off the driveway.
If your going to put them on a hill use two parallel to the hill then place the bigger one uphill touching both. It will give the big one a bit of a backing.

Sounds good. Waiting on the thumb. Never used one before. I've picked up rocks with just the backhoe bucket, sorta like trying to pick up a marble with a spoon. Should make it much easier.

I dont mind rocks keeping me from going over the drop but I dont like them crowding me on the driveway. Somewhere in all that is a happy medium.

Finally got my new thumb installed. Halfway through the rock pile.

Fantastic, how did you attach it ? I suspect it just misses when closing the bucket ? I like the old iron

Six 1/2" bolts. You can see the access holes I drilled in the side of the boom. Could also be welded but I wasn't sure where to put it. The jaw and the diagonal are on quick release pins for adjustment or removal. It hits the bucket as pictured. They have a shorter one I probably should have gotten, might cut some off. $150 delivered on Ebay.

Never seen a fixed thumb before. All the ones I've seen and used are hydraulic. They are the cat's meow for sure. Turns an excavator into a powerful extension of your arm.

Yeah the hydraulic ones are another grand, plus plumbing. For occasional use this works great. Got the job done yesterday. I got to the point where I was opening the bucket mid-swing and tossing them on the pile. Definitely more fun than digging ditches.
