 Hello All-
I had been lurking around in the back ground for awhile checking this site out. I figured I'd come out of the woodwork and share my story / pics. I purchased this 14' X 20' camp for summer fun in the Southern Adirondacks in 2008.. It needed a lot of work and I am still not done.. The camp was built in the 1950's and half of the floor was collapsed and sitting in the soil.. Half the roof had also fallen in.. ( see pics 3 posts down ) It needed to be jacked and pushed all over to get her straight. Restoring the camp to 1950's charm was and is my objective. The ships lap siding was in excellent shape and I was able to stick with that.. The outhouse is grandfathered in so NO septic is needed..( money saver ) Spring water tap right up the road ( NO well on-site ) Camp sits about 500' from Great Sacandaga Lake which is great for fishing, swimming, sailing, and bathing.. She sits on about 1/3 of an acre, full of Hemlocks, Maples and Red Oaks.. Next summer, I will build a deck off the back. I am prefabing it right now..

Scout, looks like you've had your hands full restoring that beauty! Nice job! I LOVE the screen door, also the little kitchen table. I have a table almost identical to that with matching chairs except the top is a retro yellow. Cool, keep us posted!

Thanks for the reply timberjack.. Yes, I held onto the 1960's style kitchen table and the old electric 1950's kitchen stove. Also, the built in bunk beds that were there - they are in the last picture. While I am not at camp now ( to cold ) and out of work.. I am prefabing a deck for the back of the cabin.

Here are some other pictures of the camp before I got it to the place it is now.. The Fix-Up stage... The camp originally had a front porch, but that clearly couldnt be saved.

Had a question for the group.. Judging from what you see and the dimensions of my camp at 14' X 20' Can you tell me how much the materials would cost on a camp my size?

Thanks and great web-site.. Glad I found others like me..

 scout100,
Very nice job on the restore. My brother's place is near the sacandaga yacht club. Lots of vintage camps in the area. Nice find!
I'm trying to get a fix on your location from the mountain view shot above.

Aha, thanks scout100. I was born & raised in A-dam and although don't live there any more still come back frequently. It really dismays me when I drive along and see so many of the old camps being razed and replaced by huge mansions on the waterfront.
All that NYC money coming north. People getting out of the city and all, especially after 9/11.
Its a pleasure to see an old place resurrected for a change!

 Hi Scout

What a wonderful job you have done.

It looks like you are enjoying your place now that most of the work is done.

Thanks for the compliments guys. Yes, its a fun place to be in the summer.. I wish I could find another one to salvage. I love jacking them and watching them go from something thats falling over to something thats reasonably level, square, and plumb. Ya never get them perfect, but you can get them looking pretty good.

The dug well is only down 10'.. At the time I put it in, we had a pretty good stretch of dry weather ( about 44 days straight ) and it was still yeilding me about 30 gallons every morning ( 24 hour recharge ) I can just imagine what it will yeild after winter in the spring. I will build an outdoor shower and shower with that well water and also use it to wash my dishes. I believe it to be surface water coming off a nearby hill so I'm cautious to drink it. Protocol for washing dishes is to add bleach to it and then let those dishes dry in the Sun. Suns UV rays will practically kill anything. Thanks Again.

Hi. I, too, am planning on building a 14x20 foot cabin. (My thread is the "Cozy Cabin for $4000 additions" one). My first plan was just the basic 14x20 rectangle, but I found it too confining with the closets and builtin sofa on the west wall. The 4x10 foot bumpout really improved the interior. I plan to build in stages, with a screen porch, mudroom, and pantry addition in the future (depending on cashflow). It's too bad you could have raised the roof pitch when you replaced it in order to have a useable sleeping loft. Very nice build, though. Glad you saved the building, most would have torn it down.

You're flipping your camp after all that work? Good luck, and on to the next one, perhaps?

You wouldn't happen to be related to that 'Tuffy' guy on the Cabin Kings TV show, would you? He's from around your area
