On the Green Building Advisor site a gentleman is building his own house and he decided to use Sturdimount cellular PVC mounting blocks for his exterior lights.

You can also get mounts for electrical outlets, water spigots, dryer vents, etc. The main advantage to using these mounts is that there is a water tight seal around the fixture and you have a nice clean connection around the mount to the siding.
As with any hole drilled through your exterior wall you should add a flashing membrane first, such as those made by Quickflash.
