Outside of North America I’ve seen a fair amount of decking made of planks with a combed or striated surface. Lately I’ve also noticed them used on planks in Pinterest’s walkway photos etc. (maybe photos out of the UK or somewhere).
Anyway, I don't think they are at all common in North America. Is this correct and why?

I've seen such in Canada but it's not natural wood but composite decking planks, some are made from recycled plastics while others are not.

So it seems a search for “Reeded decking boards†brings up the largest number of results. (All are UK web sites.)
Here’s a photo. I’ll look for better pics. https://thumbs.dreamstime.com/z/old-wooden-plank-boardwalk-trail-swamp-area-near-wate r-autumn-colored-nature-132169748.jpg
This could be composite but the wooden planks look the same: https://pin.it/32wfBea

I can't answer if that's correct or not, and the "why" could be any number of reasons, starting with Europe still being quite different culturally than the US. I personally wouldn't want those because they wouldn't dry out as fast due to those grooves, and those grooves would also retain a lot of dirt and other debris.

I suspect it's for increased traction. Maybe for looks, I don't know.
However, I agree with spencerin, it will trap dirt and moisture.
