I've been looking forward to this for 30 years.

I grew up here, in a camp community in upstate NY, from birth until I was 13, when my parents decided to give up the cabin. But like many of my friends, I found my way back 20 years later when I had a family of my own. 25 years ago we got our own cabin (not the same one but nearby), then moved into the [larger] cabin next door, which I spent the next 5 years renovating.

When I was a kid, we spent the whole summer (end of school through Labor Day) at the cabin... it was only a half hour from our house and Dad willingly accepted the extra commute time to work. But now we live two hours away (without traffic) so it became a weekend thing for me, with long weekends and the occasional week using up my vacation time. My wife (and kids while they were still at home) stayed all week while I went home to go to work. The routine was to fight rush hour traffic on Friday to hopefully get to the cabin in time for a swim in the lake before dinner, and get up in the wee hours of Monday morning to drive to work. I was just waiting until I could retire, and spend the whole summer there as I did was a kid.

That happened this year. My last day of work was a Thursday (so I wouldn't have to deal with Friday rush hour traffic) in May. Instead of going to the cabin every weekend, I now go the house for a day or two every couple of weeks, to pick up the mail and mow the grass. I've done more hiking this year than in the 10 years prior! And instead of leaving on Labor Day when the "official" season ends, we're still here. We'll head back to the house in a couple of days as the water gets shut off soon and the power gets spotty, but we'll be back for the occasional off grid weekend (or weekday).

Did it a few years ago myself. Hard to beat that experience. Congrats. Life is just slower and simpler at the cabin.

Congrats on the retirement!
We do one weekend a month and typicaly 3-4 long weekends a year. Unfortunately I cant get a week of when my son is off. Our cabin is 3hrs away. If it was only 30min away I couldn't afford it nor would it have the solitude it does. Also if it was 30min away I wouldnt bother living in my house, I would rent it out and live in the cabin.

Congrats. That is fantastic! I have 200ish days to go until retirement. I plan on spending a significant amount of time at my cabin in the next couple of years.

Awesome! Congrats on retirement! I'm just entering retirement as well, and look forward to some extended stays at our place. So far the longest has been 2 weeks. The drive is 3.5 hrs plus traffic issues, so weekends are tight.
Our place is water (or ice) access, and my dream is to stay through the 'shoulder' seasons one year. My better half doesn't see the appeal, so it'll be a hard sell.

I'm about 16yrs from retirement and my plan is to buy a 25ac+ lot near my cabin 3yrs before retirement and then build a house
with cash. Then sell the house and probably the cabin
