I'm putting up a wire fence using these T posts, and this driver, but man they don't want to go in. I've now cut the bottom 3 corners off diagonally so they form a point, going to try again in the morning.

Wet ground would help, but it's 150 ft. Guess I could carry a 5 gallon bucket but would need time to soak in, no?

Get a helper. Drive the post down to the wings with your post driver. Then shove it in with your backhoe bucket.

Yeah, sometimes they are a *#!ch hammering them in manually. Sometimes you can't even get a small skidsteer in place to press them in with the bucket, so the ranch owns a Titan Post Driver. Google it. Very handy. Expensive too. There are cheaper ones but I've never used them.

Adding a point is good idea but if it hits a rock you're pooched unless you wanna start digging. I've bent a couple thanks to rocks and Boy what a Pita to get them out, actually had to use a Backhoe to pull 2 out. There was Ruckus-Fruckus-Frickus-Stuckus (Fred Flintstone Style) with that misadventure.

Also discovered the hard way that Not all T-Posts are as strong as one might think, some are quite pitiful actually.

Not all t-posts are created equal, that is for certain. The best are made of rail steel, the same thing train tracks are made from. The lightweight stamped sheet steel ones are crap.

Maybe try to open up a hole with a digging bar first?

Mornin', and thanks for the suggestions.

I'm putting this fence up in an attempt to keep the neighbor's dog off my property. It's supposed to be half wolf, and every time I and my little mutt have been around it, it has been aggressive. Even went to their house and tried to get to know it. Of course I have other wild animals that come around, but they have always been nocturnal. At this point I'm not letting our dog run around in the daytime. Welcome any suggestions. And yes, I could shoot it, or capture and turn it in, but would hate to, beautiful dog would be the end of that good neighbor friendship. I have asked that they keep it away but I guess it 'gets out' sometimes.

Well, about time to head down for another T post assault.

I know you don't want to haul water, but wet soil would really help, assuming it's not rocks holding you up. Put a 5-gallon pail with a few holes in it over the post location, and fill with water. The holes will slowly soak the ground underneath for better penetration and less surface run-off. Then hopefully the next day the posts go in easy.
Too bad about the dog conflict. A fence makes good neighbours, so they say!

Posts are in, the sharpened tips made all the difference. I used an angle grinder with a 4" carbide wheel, went quick.

Thanks guys.

Fwiw, back on the farm I grew up on, my dad had a local welder make his driver, a real Man-Sized one with a lot of weight. It made me Work At It but also made me plenty strong as a teen! Believe I cursed it more than once....
But Ive wished I had kept it from the estate sale more than once too. Every commercial one Ive looked at is Puny in comparison.
