I have a question about Red Clover or White Clover. I want to broadcast hand seed in late winter with snow on the ground. I did some of this last spring but it was late and no snow. I planted Alfalfa in native grass and I got about 50% take on the seed. Any suggestions on which variety to plant red or white and have you done any frost seeding or snow seeding before? Thank you.

I plant white red/white/ & yuchi clovers /with other cereal grains in the FALL in my food plots on my 1000 acre lease and on my farm as well.....

I bottom plow in the later summer and broadcast lime//let set for 3 weeks /harrow and plant 1st week of Sept. and fertilize when I pant and again mid winter....my plots look great and lots of wildlife use then...deer/turkeys/birds/small game.

In spring my clover will be 12 inches high....even with lots of deer grazing on it.

( Neb--I thought for a second you were moving to Colorado and start 420 Farming))....:LOL)

I'm laughing with you but I don't get it!! I know I'm slow TH. Now I get it!!!! I sold a nice farm with irrigation that would of produced a lot of that funny stuff. LOL I could take a trip and never leave to farm. LOL

TH I wish I could get equipment in to my place but that won't happen. Everything is by hand and makes it hard to do it right. Thanks for the help. Will clover reseed itself or chut up new growth from roots and start a new plant.

Thanks Just you came to my rescue once again! I knew you where a farmer but forgot about that. I will get some white clover and see what happens. I use your dates to seed and would most likely be about the same time here to seed anyway. Glad to hear from you again and hope you are doing better each day.

Neb are you trying to establish, a permanent pasture that will stay for a few years, or a food plot for deer etc? I am going to plant a food plot, this spring that I hope will last several years. Red clover will come on strong the first year, but tends to taper off the next years. White dutch ladino clover , is my favorite. Once you get it established it will keep reseeding itself, the seed is quite expensive but you only need about 2 pound to the acre, as the seeds are small.

I plan. on using red, white dutch, a bit of timothy. Will plant with a cover crop of mixed grain , planted thinly so it doesn,t smother the clovers.
A question for turkey , would I be better to summer fallow the plot and plant it , the end of August like you suggest. Do you get your seed at the local seed dealer or a premixed .product. Old243

I would say food plot for wildlife. I have some nice long draws that i would like to plant for all season crop for wildlife. I would like something that would reseed. What comes up would just add some value to the native grass that is there.

If you want something that will stay a long time, I have used , birdsfoot trefoil. I broadcast it in pastures, it was there for many years. goes to seed early september around here. The first year you may not see , much growth, but once it is established, it will stay. I think Leo was the variety I used but not sure. Old243

Man that is some high priced seed! I will see where I can order at the lowest cost. Shipping just kills the deal. Thank Just and Old243.

Thank you sir!

My soil is kind of crappy at my site, but there are already tons of wildflowers...is clover picky about soil conditions?

Clover likes a better soil but trefoil will grow in poor soil. At least this is what I'm reading.

Well I broad casted white clover today. It snowed about 2 inches of snow and I thought I better try to get it in. I will have the freeze/thaw thing for a while yet and I hope I got it seeded at the right time. I had a backpack in the seed and hand broadcater over a mile one way. To wet to drive in and maybe a while till that happens. It flooded here very bad and some homes are gone to the flood. My sons shack maybe gone but it will take some time before we can get into it.

Anyway I hope I got it planted at the right time. I got a picture of the flooded bottom ground and it is not good. The one picture you can see a field that is pick corn fiels those stalks are about 4 to 5 feet tall. The other picture is in the direction of my sons shack about 3 miles away. Doesn't look good and hoping for the best.

JUST>> good to hear from you again! First how are you doing and you been back doing what you like to do???

Let me know how your seeding goes. I spread my in March and have had rain, snow and sleet a few times since then. That is what the doctor called for so I hope things take off once that sun starts to shine.

Did a lttle scouting yesterday and saw 7 nice toms doing the waltz on their dance floor. LOL Always fun to watch them even more then hunting them.
