I am building a small 10x12 camp in Vermont and am about to install the stove.What are some of your set ups for heat barriers/shields for the walls? I have a bunch of floor tile of slate, could I use that as a base for under the stove? Any ideas and pictures would be VERY helpful, thanks !

It depends on the stove, and the thickness of the tiles. I would consider bedding the tiles on sand or gravel to place another layer between the stove and your combustable floor. I am unsure whether these tiles would resist splitting in the intense heat, another reason to consider a second layer. Be sure to extend the stove base out to the sides and especially out to the front of the stove to prevent errant sparks from landing on an unprotected floor.

I figured I would use these floor tiles only because I have a couple boxes lying around. If better, I could go and buy a bunch of bricks I suppose? Would that be a better idea?

I used 12 in floor tile set on a 4x6 tile backer board (or whatever you call it)

Ops i hit post to soon... Anyways I put that on the wall with large screws and 1 inch spacers and large washers so it set away from the wall an inch and up from the floor a couple of inches with 3 small sections of stepping stone underneath to give it air flow around the back. It works great.

here is a picture. after looking at the pictures I actully used 2 3x5 stacked on one another. I do have a much larger stove installed than the one in the picture.

Since our floor to our kitchen bulding is mostly brick pavers the stove just sits on blocks with block caps . It doesnt get hot under the stove anyways. Remember this isnt the stove in the picture thats shown above. We have a larger one setup and its still fine.

I used the same method as Cedar Trip did behind my stove and works fine.
I bought a hearth pad for under my stove because I like the look.
