Went to the cabin this weekend to continue working on the roof. I brought my mom and dad, wife and her mom. For my mother it was her first time seeing the cabin so I was excited for her to see. When we arrived I could tell from a far that everything was not right. Through the trees I could see my bright yellow masons string that was stored there by me, wrapped and twisted all up and down teh structure, the work of local hooligans no doubt. As we approached it was obvious the vandalism was more severe than we had thought. Paint that was left behind and stored by us had been opened and splattered on the floor and interior walls, as well as what few tools we had stored got a new paint job also. Building supplies scattered and such. This has been my first experience with this. I am fortunate how ever that the damage done in terms of the paint was on the sub floor and walls before insulation, everything will be covered up. I will be putting in a call today to the owners association in hopes that some actions can be taken, although im not holding my breath :(

nathan, that really sucks. I am very sorry to hear that and I hope that you can find out who is responsible.
You mentioned an owners association. Is this similar to an HOA such as what you'd find in a suburban subdivision? Or is this a membership club-type association? There may possibly be some coverage depending on how your association is structured and if they carry insurance. I know mine has liability coverage against injury on premises. I honestly don't know but now I'll have to check on theft and vandalism. Of course we are in NY and we have regs and requirements up the you-know-what, and a lot of this is required.
I know there is an ongoing thread here about insurance and from what I can tell based on people's responses it varies widely by US state. You're in TX, correct? I would definitely go up the chain of command at your association until you get a responsible answer.

Pardon my profanity, but that sucks!
I sounds like they didn't steal anything or chainsaw your cabin?
Our place is quite remote and I really worry about all the idiots running around on 4-wheelers that cut down fences and ride across private property.
Nothing against 4-wheelers, the just seem to be the preferred mode of transportation.
Great that you can get your Mom to the cabin. I hope to get my mom up to the property this spring so she can see all our work.
Hope you can recover quickly.

thanks for the words bobrok, it is like an HOA, having a president, board of directors, and bi-laws. I seriously doubt there is any kind of insurance and in my case I believe the damage is not severe enough to make a claim even if it was available. My hopes in making the call is that the community will become known of the incident and hopefully keep a watchful eye, also If someone is caught in an act of similar vandalism I can be made know to take appropriate action. All in all, Im thankful nothing was stolen or damaged beyond repairs ( no broke windows, exposed electrical not tampered with, etc.) Its just disshearting and feels like an invasion of personal space

Thanks Mike, it sounds more like young kids sewing their wild oats, then some out to do real harm. It was gratifying to see my moms reaction to all my hard work! Im sure yours will react just the same :)

It IS an invasion of your space. I'm not really an eye-for-an-eye kind of person insofar as taking retribution against these people, but I hope that you can overcome the emotion of discovering this and the uncertainty of leaving your place unattended in the future.

It sounds like kids alright.It just turns my stomic to know there are dissrespectful humanbeings out there that could do this kind of thing.It makes me fear leaving my place unattended.Some people can be so rotten and yet some so wonderful.I'm sorry this had to happen to you,Nathan.We have had incidents simular to yours.Just blatient diregard for other peoples property.

Oh I am so very sorry that this has happened. It really makes you lose faith in mankind - even if it was just kids. It is still YOUR property and it sounds like they were just trying to "have some fun". Yeah, some fun - wrecking all your hard work. *sigh* Things like this really have a way of spoiling a santuary that so much work has gone into. If there are any neighbours around, I hope they will keep their eyes open so that nothing like this can happen again. I am really, really sorry for you. Sending you a {{BIG GROUP HUG}} from your small cabin friends.

Personal violation is more like it.
So glad only surface damage, but it digs at the heart anyway.

i am sure sorry to hear this.it is something i always worry about.
my nitemare.i hope u get things fixed and it never happens again.
do u have any idea of who might of done this??we had our camper booth cut out of our camper in our woods and some really good windows stollen.that was ten yrs ago and i am stil looking at all the windows of everyones cabins in our neck of the woods.i am still lookng to this day.
glad not too much was damaged beyond repair.

nathan, sorry this happened to your camp, and when a time you were taking your Mother up to see your hard work. I would think about getting a trail cam camera, get one for 125 or so from Bass Pro, with infra red , where no flash. Install it up in a tree HIGH with ladder facing the cabin. Next time you will have pic's of the B@@T@@Ds.

Turkeyhunter, I have thought of this very thing and most likely will, any ideas on how to camo it? Id hate for it to get noticed and stolen. plus we do get deer around there so that would be a good investment anyway :)

they make a lock box for trail cams, camo and put it up high in a tree under a tree limb, aim it down toward your camp.BTW the lock box is lag bolted to the tree, get a ladder and install it, and it would give you a piece of mind. They have a trail cam now that will take the pic send it to home computor or cell phone every time it takes a pic . it requires a cell phone monthly service BUT could give you a piece of mind while you are away.

nathan sorry about the damage thankful its not unfixable but still makes you sick of worry when you're not there I am sure hope they catch whoever is responsible the trail cams are pretty neat daughters boyfriend had one to see the wildlife in the area got pretty good shots even got one of a bear taking a poop ha ha

Sorry about your damage. I bet the culprits spattered paint their clothes... I'd visit all the nearby neighbors and tell them about the vandalism and that they were likely paint-spattered. Chances are, their moms do their wash, but bad parents will cover for their kids. The good parents will make sure their kids are punished. Free mowing for a year? Two?

did a quick search myself, the only one i found that will let you access from home is like $600, maybe theres another kind, I will keep looking. Most likely will do a cheap $150-$200

I have a Bushnell Trophy Cam. It's taking me a while to get it to perform. I'm not real happy yet. Today I'm looking thru thousands of useless photos ..... just 3 of a coyote. My advice is to install it somewhere at home, where you will get certain "periodic action", with several hours of "no action" in between. Once you get it all adjusted and understood, then move it to your chosen location. And then move it to the 'better' chosen location. Unless you are already a 'hidden camera pro' this will take some time.
In general, don't mount it at eye level. Up high, out of line-of-sight is safer. If it's hidden behind 'stuff' make sure the 'stuff' can't blow (move) in the wind.
A lockbox might be difficult to hide. A vandal, if he knew there was a camera in the lockbox would be a real moron to refrain from destroying that lockbox. A thief might realize the camera is worth $185. There is a little safety in that they are often 'real morons'. But it's not easy to drive away from a $185 camera in the woods.
It would be extremely useful to simply KNOW who did this. Anything, even just a picture of the vehicle could be very useful to prevent it from happening again.
Very sorry to hear about the violation of your retreat. That's a terrible loss in itself, I hope you can get back to enjoying it.

Man that is SOOO wrong. I had a much worse event created by some local teenagers. Trashed the inside of my camp and then discharged a large fire extinguisher which coated every square inch in white dust!
Eventually, my reward offer was taken up and the police found the culprits and gave them as much hell as they could for being minors
. Luckily, my insurance paid for the cleanup but some things can never be replaced. Just goes to show you that if some clown wants to mess with your place there's little you can do besides sit on the porch and wait for them to come by. Did I forget to mention... break their legs. It's really tough keeping thieves out of a remote cabin.

Sorry to hear that Nate. Don't let the little bastards get you down though. Eventually some idiot will get busted and perhaps in the long run justice will be served. I always worry that when I haven't been at my place for a long spell I'm going to find the windows smashed and all my stuff hauled out. So far we have been lucky.
There is only so much you can do to protect yourself and in the end if someone decides to go on a rampage there isn't much that can be done to stop them. Don't let 'em get you down, battle back and show them they didn't win. Love to catch them in the act and pay them back with the fat end of a baseball bat.
My buddy saw someone crawl over the railing on his second floor deck one night. He was sleeping, heard a noise and saw this kid outside his open sliding glass door which went out to the deck. He snuck up just as the kid was in front of the door and jacked a shell into the chamber of his semi-auto 9 MM. The sound alone I'm sure scared the hell out of the kid but when my buddy took aim and said "freeze or I'll shoot!" I think the kid needed a change of underwear.
