I just joined up here after finding I was coming here often as a visitor. Ive picked up some great ideas and may have some tips to share since my wife and I started the small cabin experience back in 1983-84 when we handbuilt a rustic, offgrid, dry (recreational/ getaway) 380ish sq.ft. cabin with salvaged wood from the original barn on the farm built in Aug. 1897. We had wood heat and a very modest 12v battery lighting system which I did the old battery swap/home to charge thing. Sadly, we lost it Sept 1 of this year after my folks died and we had to sell off the estate.
36 years taught us a few things, but not everything! We knew the end was coming so we had been looking for some years for a replacement more suited to our advancing age. End of Aug. 2019 we found it but only closed this last Aug. 1 2020. 9ish mixed wood acres, meadow up the middle, off grid dry 380ish sq.ft. rustic hunting cabin' built Aug. 2012; newish build but neglected and a property in need of love and sweat equity. It has 600 some watts of solar panels, a Blue Sky 50a cc and a mostly dead set of 4 big 12v x 130ish ah batteries and a 1K watt psw inverter for me to play with. Im glad to report we have already cleaned it up and have it usable, the wood stove works and this years firewood is ready. Best thing is it it in a lovely, quiet area, no neighbors in view and only 45min. from home. We can go up for an afternoon, a day, several or.....no worries; with a fresh fill up of artesian spring water en-route.
This 'new' cabin, setting and location suits us better and the threads here give me plenty to read up on to make it better.
Almost 68 and still 'doin it'.
We are blessed.

Hi Everyone! I'm here because I just bought one acre of land and I'm excited to make it pretty, even though I am not allowed to build on it. (I am applying to have a farmstand, but I don't think it will be approved since the NEC is pretty tough.) It's a nice feeling to know that you own the soil you walk on. I feel grounded. And the Lion's Head area is so beautiful, its exactly 3 hours drive from my condo in downtown Toronto. I am learning a lot, owning this lot is making me feeling more engaged and interested in learning about nature and the simple way of life (even though I don't live there).

Hi I just joined this group. I am looking for the right Battery charger for off grid no solar option, for Honda eu 2000 to power 2/ 40 amp hr in series lithium iorn phosphate battery bank. I only need 12 volt lo voltage lights and usb charger , maybe a dc water pump for sink no shower use. Outdoor toilet. This is a seasonal cabin.....so many chargers and most of discussions revolve around solar..which is not part of my proposed system.

Welcome!
12v will be your two 40ah LFP batteries wires in Parallel, not series.
Fwiw, Ive done what you propose.
Best to post up a new thread on what you are doing so it doesnt plug up this thread I'll be glad to tell you there what I did.

I am here because I need a new home as my old falls apart and I don't know much about constructions. I am afraid that if I don't inform myself, I am being cheated by companies or don't get what I need.

I grew up in the Upper Peninsula of Michigan and spent a lot of time in the woods camping and such. I miss being able to drive 20 minutes to be in a National Forest / out in the boonies.

I've always been attracted to small homes / cottages for whatever reason. Simplicity maybe? My goal is to have a small cabin that I can go to whenever I want to get away from suburban light pollution, traffic, and noise. To stay within easy driving distance, I might have to settle for a small plot surrounded by corn fields, but that would be fine.

Hi everyone,
I grew up in Timmins Ontario surrounded by nature. Last 25 years lived in central Toronto and have missed nature & its benefits. Spent the last 9 years building a 1 room cabin, off the grid, on a quiet lake (no gas motors) on 10 acres of land near Parry Sound.
I like this site for real reviews and real experiences from real people. I need to do more digging around all the site's topics.
