Simple roofs are stronger, but dormered, multi gables, etc, add a lot of interesting charm. What do you like? Low pitch trusses are the cheapest. Steeper rafter construction is efficient, you can use the space for something, although I'm not a big fan of lofts.

I'm trying to understand what you mean by treated skids. The only skid I've ever known is a shipping palate. Is this just two laminated beams held together with a couple 2x8s?

Owen, I really like your cabins and ended up building mine on skids with a 15 to 20 inch ground clearance in Northern Mn. I did not insulate the osb floors so I'm wondering if you would recommend water proofing the underside that is open to the elements?
I have 4 inches crushed gravel with a 6ml barrier and plan to add cedar lattice around the perimeter. Do you think I need to do anything else for moisture control or to keep snow out? I'd like the cabin to last for generations. Thanks!

Sorry Carr, I havn't been around here very much for a while. Wicking ground moisture shouldn't be problem as long as you don't have a source of water leading it under you cabin. Such as a low spot or dip catching and leading water from rain water to under the cabin. A slight slope away from the cabin would be good.

Winter snow is not an issue. It's one of our driest seasons. A little moisture is no big deal.

Excellent, I do have the ground sloping away on all sides but I was kicking myself for not using pressure treated anyways. Thanks for the response I feel a little less stressed now!
