Not meaning to change the subject, but, old buddy are you through with school yet? If so, when are you taking boards?
P.S. that porch makes all the difference in the world in size.

I graduate July 13th, FRIDAY the 13th. lol I'll probably be taking boards in late August or early September. I am doing my preceptorship in the emergency room and so far, I love it.
I can't wait to get the roof on the porch. It should give us some nice shade this summer.
I did go up to the cabin today with Big Red. We took up a wooden glider and two office chairs. He didn't like being on the hill without his
pap, so he ended our trip a little prematurely. lol He did help with moving the glider and chairs though.

On a side note, last week I went past a garage sale that had a buck mount for sale for cheap, so we added another "Monster" to the cabin. lol

Well, not yet officially. I know the beard fools a lot of people. I like it that way. I have done it all, from teaching, to working in a prison, to working in a steel mill, and now hopefully to working in a hospital. When the local steel mill shut down a number of years ago, it impacted a lot of businesses from the trickle down effect, and our business was one of them. My old company came through and fired (permanent layoff as they called it) all of us except the terminal manager (he was transferred to kentucky). This was a fortune 250 company and I was a salary supervisor...so much for fringe benefits. It was 20 days before Christmas and my wife was 10 weeks pregnant w/ Big Red. There were no jobs available where I live and the county was offering programs to go back to school, along w/ the state, so I decided to go to school for Registered Nursing and I haven't looked back. It has been hard on us all. If it wasn't for my wife, my parents, and son...I don't think I could have done it, nor would I have wanted to. I have done this to give them a better life, and to have a nice skillset for myself. When I graduate I will have been in school one month shy of 3 years. I've enjoyed school for the most part. It was hard going back at 33, but I ended up being our class president for a term, and Im the resident Jeremiah Jones redneck on hand. At this point, I can't wait for it to be over.

I just got off the hill around 6:30 PM. Old Buddy and Big Red and I went up this AM around 0900 and started in on the final installation of the roof rafters and support brackets. We got the 2X4 purlins on just about the same time Old Buddy had to leave but my daughter from Grove City and her family showed up at the "bottom" of the hill. I drove him down and loaded my daughter and her two kids (Whitney-7 and Garyn-5) in the truck along with Tristin (Big Red) and took them up the hill while Old Buddy hitched a ride back to his house with my son-in-law so he could get some "shut-eye" before midnight shift at the hospital.

I drove the my daughter up to the cabin and we had some nice "sit around time" because it was so blazing hot and I wasn't going to handle that sheet metal until it cooled down. My son-in-law came back and I drove down and picked him up. He cooked us up a nice late lunch of hot dogs and hamburgers and around 4:00PM we started in on the roofing. We completed it around 6:00PM and cleaned up and headed home. Today was the hottest day we have had on the hill so far...when I have been there. I'm happy to report that the roofing went on without a hitch! It's a little easier when it isn't 12:12 pitch!
Old Buddy will post some pictures tomorrow.

Here are some pics of yesterdays efforts. Here are all of the joists hanging.

Old Old Buddy says he can't manage to ever get a pic of himself working...wonder why?

Here's all the grandkids. I guess Big Red was strutting around doing Charles Atlas poses showing off his birdcage ribs. lol

Half of the metal on.

The finished product. Looks good.

I saw this sign on the Fosson's cabin and I just had to have it.

All done for now...now onto the next project...the lean-to. lol

Just some additional pics I took today. Well, my fixall for the deer feeder is not working out. Evidently the racoons have learned how to manipulate the impeller because today was the second time I caught one hanging off the bottom of it feeding his belly...and almost all of the corn has been emptied (about 100lbs.) in the last week and a half. Time to get out the scattergun. lol
Here's the alleged thief! lol

A view from the knob.

My Uncle and Dad surveying the work.

Old Buddy and I took Big Red up to the cabin on Saturday, June 2nd, and we were able to dig two holes for our 4X4's to use as a support for our target base which will be about 48"x48" of 3/4" treated plywood. The target/s will be 250 yards from our shooting bench.

I'm shooting a .308 Savage Tactical rifle and according to the experts,a 168 grain projectile with X amount of powder, the bullet should drop about 19 inches. My plan is to put one 20"X20" target on top of a second 20"X20" target. I'll aim at the top one and hope to land the majority of my rounds in the center area of the bottom target. It's just an idea I want to try...I'm not sure it will work but it makes sense to me. We'll see.

I plan to go up tomorrow evening and try it out. Old Buddy will take his Springfield 03-A4 and experiment. Hopefully we'll get some photos of the targets.

Well, another afternoon of work finished at the cabin today. After putting up our target framework last week, we decided that walking up on the bank to change targets was going to get old quick and neither Old Old Buddy or myself wanted to get an ankle sprain trying. You can get around behind it on an old road that had a good bit of fallen timber and vines intertwined making kind of a mess. Last week we attempted to start cutting it out with the chainsaw...that was turning out to be a slow process. Old Old Buddy came up with the idea of just dragging it out with the old chevy via tow chain. Turns out Old Old Buddy had a good idea...he some now and then. Anyways, it went pretty quick and now we have access to the target directly either by the pickup or four wheeler.
Here's Old Old Buddy and Big red after the work was completed. Big Red is the on site foreman. lol

Here they are looking back towards the cabin.

Merely two hours before this was taken, you just about couldn't see through here. Now you can drive a Mack truck through here...well maybe not a Mack.

The boss here, checking my work. lol As you can see to the left, that's the new path. The right will lead you to the target also, with a hike up the bank.

Big Red loves my saw. It's a 361 Stihl or the old 036 as they used to call them. He likes my saw so well that last year I bought him a toy electric one. He cant saw up too much with the rubber blade, but he gives our cat Seabass hell with it. lol

I was thinking a Zip line to and from target, in the shooting lane...

That would be real handy but I don't think it's going to happen. Old Buddy doesn't like high places, especially if he's zipping across treetops about 80-100 feet above the ground!

It's not too bad travelling to and from the target. We just jump on the four-wheeler and "zip" out a road that's about 4/10 mile out around the ridge until we're directly across from the cabin. The road is wide enough to take my truck but the four wheeler is a lot easier on gas!
We can get over to the target, put the stickers on, take a photo, etc., and be back to the cabin in about four minutes.

We were pretty happy with the results of the first shoot. Old Buddy and I were shooting three-shot groups with a .308 and a .270. The tightest group we had was less than two inches at 250 yards. Most impressive for me was the fact that I loaded all the ammo and it performed flawlessly. Old Buddy and I would get two shots within 5/8" to 3/4" center-to-center, but the third shot would put us out around 2 inches, total diameter. Anyway....we hope to improve on it ...a little.

Old Old Buddy--really like the new range set up- sounds like the reloads are doing great at 250 yds.

It's funny you mention those damn crocs. I still think they are the ugliest shoe made, but I had to fight my wife, Old Buddy and my best friend about not liking them. I was not going to wear them...period.

Then I got a gift card from Dick's Sporting Goods for my 60th birthday (a while back) and finally spent it on those ugly shoes I'm pictured wearing. I have tripped in them, fell off the ladder in them and don't ask me why....but I'm still wearing them. Ha! I felt like I was fighting city hall so I "caved under the pressure" and bought them.

I was happy with the reloads. I loaded some 300 Win-Mags for Old Buddy about 2 months ago and went strickly with my older Lyman's Reloader Manual. Well.....it was wrong! It listed IMR-3031 as the first choice and since I had a couple pounds...I used it. WRONG! We had something develop called "hang-fires." Since I've only been loading a couple years I had never heard of it but it's (if you don't already know) what happens when you use too fast of a burning powder in a loaded casing. Very dangerous! I talked to several "knowledgeable" people about it and asked them how two of my manuals can identify IMR-3031 as the proper powder...when it wasn't. They said that some powders have changed characteristics over the years and IMR3031 is not the same powder it use to be. Everyone said..."Get a new manual tight wad!" I did.

Anyway....the 308's and 270's were loaded a year or so ago and were flawless...thank God! We put the rifles on the picnic-table on the porch in the shade. It worked out perfect. Thanks for the comments.

Today was a great day for Old Buddy! He took his final exam for Registered Nursing School and even got the highest score of the class. We are so proud of him. He still has to volunteer at the Emergency Room for the next four weeks, thereabouts, and then he'll graduate on July 13th! He'll take his "boards" in a couple months. Please pray for him and his new career. Thanks.

Yea......they're right popular but they're still ugly as can be. I think they look better on the grandkids than they do on grown-ups! LOL.
But make no mistake....I'll have mine on when I go up to the cabin, hopefully, on Friday.

Old Buddy and I went up to the cabin on Thursday past and week-wacked all around the cabin. It was starting to resemble a jungle due to the high weeds so we knocked everything down pretty good. It really looked nice after we were done. We cleaned up the area, moved several logs over near the fire place which we will cut up this fall for fire-wood. It really needed a good trimming.

On Friday, June 22nd (my 38th anniversary!) Old Buddy and I escorted two friends of mine up the hill in the Chevy. It was slick from a recent rain and they were both "visibly" afraid of climbing the steep hills. I guess I'm just use to it....I didn't really think it was that bad but it wasn't my first trip either. I remember that trip and , yes, I was afraid the first time...and it was dry out.

The four of us had a good time sitting on the porch and they even tried their hand at the 250 yard range with my .308. Pretty good shooters....both of them!

We will have to make a trip up today that I'm definitely not looking forward to. Old Buddy's dog, Savage, a four year old German Shepard has been extremely sick and he has had him to one Vet on Friday morning and was diagnosed with a type of flu. He gave him 3 different meds including an antibiotic but by yesterday morning he was obviously much worse. Old Buddy called his brother-in-law (150 miles away) who just happens to be a vet and he told Old Buddy "I'll get my things and come right away." Long story short.....everything he did would not touch Savage's fever, nor his infection. It appears that we'll be "putting him down" within the next couple hours, according to Tony, (my son-in-law, the Vet). It is such a shame. He is such a beautiful animal. He was about 100 pounds but much less now. He gave him one final bag of IV fluids and a shot of anti-biotics about an hour ago "hoping for a miracle." Old Buddy wants to bury him on the hill. Old Buddy and I will be doing the digging. My son-in-law can't help because he was bitten "pretty good" last night and his hand is swollen and has a very deep puncture wound from Savage's canine tooth. Thank God he has shots for all of this. Tony and I worked with him for nearly seven hours none stop last night. He told me that Savage is "septic" and is very unresponsive. Old Buddy had to work at the emergency room last night so I became a "Vet Helper." I prayed that he would recover....but it doesn't look too good now....like one shot in a million. Please keep Old Buddy and his family in your thoughts and prayers.
