Thanks. We think it is pretty cool, too but let me tell you, that running water wasn't free. haha

It actually cost more than the entire solar we are putting in will cost.

Had to look up caliche and yeah, that looks like it is going to be a job.

Gotta tell you, though, digging postholes is no picnic here, either.

There are so many rocks here that you have to use a rock bar/spud bar and posthole diggers to get the job done.

I had never even heard of a rock bar until I got to Missouri.

Never had sparks fly while I dug postholes before now, either. It is like a fireworks show.

Good luck on getting those lines in tomorrow!

Same issue here.. sparks and such. We have a 2550 gallon tank that filled up in one month with rainwater.. so we got really lucky.

 off to my ranch!

 Keep the pics coming!

Thanks for posting your journey! Your cabin is awesome!
My wife and I are beginning our cabin journey. Hoping to make an offer on 18 acres today
We've been thinking of building a cabin similar floor plan to yours. It will all come down to money...
The trees are so awesome this year!

My wife and I left yesterday on a 2 day fall drive through areas all within 2 hours of our house. Spent the night in Branson and are continuing the drive this morning.

We took some incredible fall pictures I will share when we get home later today.

FYI...the Titanic Museum is awesome. Go see it if you get to Branson, MO.

We live in St James, MO. We're about 1 1/2 hours east of Springfield on I-44.
My niece went to the Titanic museum a couple months ago and said it was really cool.

 Looking forward to your pics!

As promised, here are a few of the 200 or so pictures we took on our fall foliage drive my wife and I took this weekend.

I wish I could show you all of them. Honestly it was just so beautiful we found ourselves stopping it seemed like every mile or so to snap a couple. I have traveled across a good bit of the world and it is hard to find much that is more beautiful than this.

All of the pictures are from within 2 hours of Branson, MO.

It is cold as heck and we just got 14 inches of snow that doesn't look like it is going to be going away anytime soon.

We are getting ready to celebrate our first Christmas in our new home.

Hope everyone has a wonderful holiday!

 Merry Christmas, everyone!

That is AWESOME! I may have missed it, but I'm wondering about the solar.. Did you install a solar plan? Are you completely off of the grid? I'm currently considering doing something similar in AZ but being 100% off grid concerns me.

Unless I missed it, I didn't see what the well ended up costing to drill. We may be starting our build this spring in So. MO. I have been told that the well must be cased and may run $20 per foot. If this is true then I may have to rethink. One of our neighbors is at 420 and another is over 600! Their wells were in place already when they purchased so they have no idea what the cost was. You have a nice place there. Great job!

Chris...no, we have not installed the solar yet. I had hoped to have it done by now but the weather has not been cooperative this winter so it is delayed until Spring.

In all honesty, running the house on the Hondas has been terrific and low cost so it hasn't been much of a hardship at all.

Snuffy...depending on the soil in the well shaft, yes, you may need casement for a good way down. MO requires 80 ft of steel casing and beyond that can be PVC liner which is only $14 a foot if I remember correctly but still expensive.

Ours had to be cased the entire 349 ft of depth.

Total cost was $6500 for the hole and $2200 for the pump & pressure tank so almost 10k total after all was said and done.

 Thanks...we love it, too.

I too am a pyro woman. LOL! I love your place. We went with a 16x24 footprint, and are considering plywood strip flooring, but I am intrigued by yours. Is that really the t&g you used on interior walls? If so, what did you do with the little groove? Did you shave it off? Thanks, in advance.

 Good morning, KSalzwedel,

Yes, that is the exact same T & G we used on the walls.

When you flip it over, there is no groove...just straight board. This flat side is the side we used for the floors. Used the grooved side for the walls & ceiling.

Here is a tip if you decide to do it:

Cut the boards to varied lengths to stagger joints and stain them in advance. Staining in advance lets you make sure to cover the edges well so when the boards shrink, all you see is stained wood.

Someone shared this with us before we installed it and I am really glad they did. Now even though the boards have shrunk a bit, we still see nothing but stained wood.

We love the floors. They are probably a little soft for flooring but this will only add character as time goes by and this is one of the things we were looking for in our place.

 Good luck in your building!

I do a good bit of driving with my work and see quite a few old cabins in my travels.

Wish I could have seen these when they were still used.
