Is that a beaver lodge in the pond with the pelicans? Love the fall color yellow on that canoe photo. Are those aspen trees? I have those a little higher up in elevation above my cabin near water.

Looks like last weekend (CDN Thanksgiving) could be our last weekend at the shack for awhile. The weather is closing in. We had a good 2013 at the place with 31 visits and over 60 days spent at the place so far.....Good for the soul.

Toyota, yes that is the beaver lodge on our main pond. And, yes we have trembling aspen, balsam poplar and birch that provide the brilliant yellows and hazelnut, chokecherry that give us a nice mix of reds.

We finally got out to the shack. First time since Cdn Thanksgiving. A gorgeous day. Today we are expecting heavy snowfall and winter.

Got some great trail cam shots of the residents.

Not sure if the title of this post should be "An early Christmas present" or " Fools & their money are easily separated" BUT after a brief negotiation the lady wife and I purchased 80 acres of "land" adjacent to the 400 acres we already own. I use the term land very loosely as it is about 18 acres of terra firma and the rest is water. What is significant is that this means we now own almost all the land access to the 140 acre pond and when we look across the pond it is all "ours".

Okay you can't own water but you can own access.

So yesterday we went to scout out the new land and post it with No Trespassing signs. We managed to drive up to the cabin through a foot of snow. Next trip it will likely be snowshoes.

Quite pleased with our little heater too. It started in under a minute and had warmed the cabin at chest level from -8c to +1c in about 20 minutes. Of course the ceiling was 10C warmer and the floor was still frozen.

we're also Sask people! Just purchased 60 acres of bush with a clearing and 2 beaver ponds. Also a creek that runs along one edge. Haven't started a cabin yet. Waiting for spring to see the "lay of the land" Very excited to start tho. Have fun

Got out to RDL to enjoy a +6C day in the sunshine after brutal -30c winter. Glorious. We were able to snowshoe around the "new" 80 and check it out before most of it turns into water. Pleased with our purchase.

It's nice to see some fellow Saskatchewanites on here - I, and my family, are from Regina. I now live in Alberta, but still come "home" a few times a year to see family and go spend time at the family cabin at Regina Beach. I miss it... I love your photos @Bugs - it's very reminiscent for me. Congratulations @KimTodd.

It has been a while since I have posted.

Had a great season of getting out to the property almost every weekend. Altho we added 1.5 km of hiking/snowshoe trails and had to maintain the existing 3.5 km we were still able to get a lot or real R&R in and enjoy the scenery and residents.

Just read this from the beginning for the first time and I actually yelled "Nooooooo!" out loud when Bugs said it was the end of the thread. It cannot be, it's just such a charming & liveable little retreat in such an idyllic place teeming with life.

And it's all been so beautifully captured on camera that readers - particularly nature lovers - can genuinely feel they've witnessed the special beauty of this particular patch of earth though the seasons.

Not to be too morbid here, Bugs, but when you and LadyWife pass on through the Aurora Borealis into the next life, I hope that the RDE can somehow be left intact to be enjoyed by all the others who come behind you as a preserve - a place for the next generations to visit as a "last stand" bulwark of nature against the onslaught of development there.

And please, please, please reconsider continuing this wonderful thread!

Hi All: Thought I would post an update on our project...I see its been a year.

tichalet: Glad you enjoyed our story. The present plan is to donate at least 320 acres to a nature charity for a nature sanctuary when we take the dirt nap or we get too feeble to go out and enjoy the place. That way it should be preserved. Currently we are just enjoying the place and working on documenting its biodiversity. We have recorded over 570 species of flora and fauna so far with many yet to identify.

It was quite the year.

We added a Billy Goat brushcutter to our equipment list. It works as described. It has reduced our lane/trail mowing time from about 20+ hours of blood, sweat and tears to about 5 hours of strolling behind it. We also broke down and bought a 20' sea container to securely store the above, the canoe and other items we have out there. We are working on a mural for the container.

We had a massive outbreak of forest tent caterpillars that defoliated 95% of the leaves on the place and then they pupated on everything including our cabin and the cabin door. We had to cut our way in a couple of days. Quite awe-inspiring to see.
