We will have to make time to get to that museum...it could keep me busy for hours. Lol. Isn't there a train under the St. Louis River from the bridge braking? I remember reading about that in a book on logging history.

You will have a fantastic weekend at the cabin! We can't go next weekend either due to my daughters baby shower. This weekend my husband is working and tonight we have a big combination birthday party planned. All but one daughter will be here. I will get to see all the grandkids. Should be a hoot!

I hadn't heard about that. I'll have to research it. A couple years ago, when we had clear ice out a ways from Park point, a skater and his daughter found the wooden ribs of a sunken ship just a few feet down in clear water. shipwrecks of Lake Superior is a whole 'nuther story. We are so lucky to live here. Have a good time tonight. Thanks for the chat.

I once visited a small pond no bigger than yours that had all kinds of aquatic vegetation and aquatic live of all kinds. It got me thinking about small wildlife ponds. I think they are a real point of interest and a real benefit to local habitat. I hope your small pond captures imaginations like that small pond I once saw.

Owen,
Well speaking of Logging History have you read the book There's Daylight in the Swamps? We have the book at our cabin. Good read on logging history in MN, WI and northern MI.

I don't remember it, but it sounds like a good one. To get me up at our hunting camp, Dad used to yell, daylight in the swamp.

BlaineHill,
I am really hoping it holds water. I would love to have frogs, birds, deer and the bear be able to enjoy it. When it did have water it was muddy from all the silt. We will have to work on getting vegetation around it. It was a good place to examine different paw and hoof prints-is that what you would call deer tracks? The fine silt makes the tracks really clear-maybe after the snow melts the kids can make plaster of Paris molds.

Owen,
Shipwrecks are a whole other story...equally as interesting, too!!! The maritime museum at Canal Park never gets old to me for that reason!

Stitch,
It sounds like you got your cabin built. How did it turn out? You'll have to post pics.

Yes, I can see her mom must be fun! I love her little footies and her bright colored dress.

60's by the weekend and nice next week. It looks like spring will finally win out and winter will melt away...we knew it had to happen soon. We will have to keep these snowy visions in our heads and recall them during July's hot and humid days, right?

Enjoy your last few rides

Trollbridge: No the cabin hasn't been built. We have a family cabin about 20mins south of the build. I would post pics of that but it was built years ago.

We are still hoping to build the Birch Ridge Camp this spring/summer. We have thought way too much about the foundation. The "shack" will be 16x20. We are really split between all the different types, skid, 6x6 posts or concrete sono tubes. Yes the sono tubes would be the best bet but we also have little building experience. So trying to figure out what to do on that front. Everyone on here has there own thoughts on which is best, so it makes it a hard choice while keeping the "budget" and "remote" in mind.

Good morning stitch.
I know what you mean...it is very difficult to make decisions on all these things! Everyone does have opinions of what has worked well for them, and everyone is in different areas and conditions. It can be extremely valuable to have all the help-sometimes it brings to your attention details you hadn't thought about before, but sometimes, so much information can almost paralyze you. It kinda sounds like that is where you are at. I know that feeling too.

I hope you don't mind my advice, lol, but I think if I were you, given that you have limited access to your land AND youth is on your side, AND funds are not overflowing, I would probably start small-not tiny, but comfortable, with a design that allows you to add on as your families grow. I would also throw out the low end foundation (skids) and the high end ( tubes) and go with the post, with your fingers crossed that you don't hit many rocks Putting in the foundation is the hardest part and it requires a lot of sweat-not gonna lie-it sucked But once that part is done, it gets much more fun

Do you have a floor plan or sketch of what you want to build? Be sure to give this part a ton of thought-simple details can make a huge difference in how your space will work for you. Our little bunkhouse was designed for 6 of us, and at just 12x16 it housed us surprisingly well while we built our "code" cabin

Sounds like nice weather will be here to stay soon. I'm really going to be pulling for you to get started this year. You are in a very pretty and remote area, not too far from us...I know your cabin is calling to you too!

PS...who cares if your family cabin was built years ago...in a way, all the better! I would love to see pictures

It got warm here for the last couple days, water everywhere. The snow is melting fast , but still about 18'' deep in the woods. The dirt roads are muddy.
Looks like another cabin is in the wings. This might cause problems at the small engine repair shop, double the money sooooo.
How's the weather down there? Snow at your cabin?
I didn't get to ours, because we are watching five kids this weekend and we can't haul them all. The airplane is about half melted out.

Good morning Owen,
Yes, the weather has been simply amazing!!! The windows are open and I woke up to the birds singing, the warm air feels so nice and the snow is gone and it is dry. This was the way I wish every spring could be!!! None of that long, lingering wet and dirty snow with chilly air.

On Friday, which was the first day we broke 60 degrees since long into last year (I think we even broke an all time record for longest stretch below 60), my daughters school was doing a walkathon to raise money. It was the perfect day to walk the 4 miles...I even got some sunburn! And Noelle was happy as can be to be out in her stroller soaking up the fresh air. Two days before that when we were out she was wearing her snowsuit!

I hope you are enjoying time with the grandkids, but it is too bad you didn't get to go to your cabin. Maybe next weekend? We are going no matter what...nothing is going to stop me!! Lol.

Good for you...another cabin to build. Sounds like business is picking up-I'm happy for you! I hope the shop will allow you the time off-have you talked to them about it?

Enjoy the beautiful day! I have a baby shower to help host- lots of stuff to do here in the last minutes, but should be fun, except for having to be indoors!

PS...we FINALLY got all the Christmas decorations pulled out of the ground and put away!!! Only took til April 27 and my 9 year old found her hat she had set on a bush one day while she was playing. It was buried under so much snow she never could find it. Locate any missing snow shovels yet????lol

Good morning. I know what you mean about the birds, they all seemed to be happy yesterday. The kids want to go for a walk in the woods, but the snow's still too deep for that. The driveway is muddy. I think I'll take most of them down to Lake Superior shore. It's dry and no snow down there. People fishing, skipping rocks and staring out at the horizon. Maybe go watch the snowmobile waterskips at Rice Lake.

I always got nervous watching my oldest son water skip! They are doing that in Rice Lake? I'm surprised they would have enough ice left on the lake.

I can imagine the shore of Lake S. Is packed with people today! What a beautiful day it is!

I'm waiting for my daughters to arrive. I have the car almost packed-just need the refrigerated foods...I hope I'm not forgetting anything.

I really didn't realize how much I have missed hearing the birds sing. They sound so happy!

Just got back from a walk...such a wonderful evening. I was tired from all the work of the shower, but after the huge spread of food, I figured I owe it to myself to walk off some calories!! Besides I wanted to enjoy as much time outdoors as I can-suppose to be cooler and rainy again later in the week.

Owen, is that Rice Lake, Wi? Got to thinking you probably have a different Rice Lake closer to you. Besides, that's too much ice on the lake yet. Our lake here in town has barely any ice at all left on it after the weekend, but on Friday there was still quite a bit.

The plane will be back in the air soon-taking the kids to far off places that only their imaginations know! You must be quite worn out after taking care of the 5 all weekend?! I bet they had a great time though!

Yeah, we have a Rice Lk. just north of Duluth. Kids are gone now, it's so quiet. Two more and all the parents were here for diner and a birthday cake last night. Did I say how quiet it is this morning?

Owen..........OMG......I actually get to go to the cabin for this new snowstorm....amazing!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! Weatherman says 6-9 inches and I'll take it! Yay! I'm so excited about it but my husband is starting to say maybe we should wait and go the following week. What?! No way! I've missed every other snowstorm, there is no way he is going to fetter my feet! I am going no matter what...even if I have to go alone! Well, and my little sidekick Noelle...she'll be happy to go....

I'm done babysitting for the week. My granddaughter was so cranky yesterday-she uninvited me to her birthday party about 6 times! Lol...3 year olds are funny! She would come to the cabin with me. She loves going. She calls it "the cabinet"

I think we're going to miss the snow here, and a lot of snow has melted. I think it's cool that you like the snow at the cabin. Ya know I'd like that too. I'll bet there will be snow at our cabin too. I'm supposed to go to Ely to look at some one else's cabin site Sat. , if not I'll go to my cabin too.
I always knew I was doing my job with the kids, if they sometimes were mad at me. Claudia can't understand why the kids hang on me all the time. You're so tough on them, she says to me. They are more comfortable with guidelines.
Good luck with your plans.

Well Owen...guess what it is doing outside? Yep, SNOWING! And very, very heavy! I just got home and roads are getting slick, but visibility is bad. I love the snow! Always have. I'm glad I got to get out in it tonight. Super pretty in the street lights downtown in our little town.

I went to see a movie with one of my daughters. The movie was at the budget theater and going there is like stepping back in time. I really enjoyed myself and it is weird why, but a good love story, with beautiful scenery, old seaside buildings full of vintage "stuff" AND enhanced by the "old" scent lingering in this movie theater-I could close my eyes and I was in the scene, told you it's weird-AND we were the only two there...then walk out and wha laa...wonderful falling snow!!!! I love it!

Yes, you should go to your cabin if you don't need to go to Ely...cause where else would you rather go?! Lol.

Wonder if it will be a snow day tomorrow? Keeping my fingers crossed!

Lots of schools closed in WI. Hayward was hit hard up towards Hurley.

We got nothing. Sounds like a nice theater for a spaghetti western. Love story? LOL.

Waiting for spring peepers.

School was cancelled here. We got 13 inches total-lost power for a while, and internet service until this morning. Plow made one pass between downed trees yesterday and came back this morning. We will have some clean up to do- lost a bunch of tree limbs. I would hear the crack and then the sound when they hit the ground. I'm thankful the power lasted thru my shower-no electricity=no water from our well. I was going so fast...that's happened before when I've had a full head of shampoo

Sadly, two semis crashed on the Knapp Hill killing one driver and I know of an older woman who was killed when her exhaust vent for her furnace was covered by snow. Both those deaths are sad.

Looks like it missed our cabin from what I can tell, and I think I'm actually kinda glad. Crazy!

Yeah, it's time for the spring peepers.....................
