Old Buddy & Old Old Buddy---keeping your you guys and Savage in my prayers, i had my lab put down due to cancer on Feb 15th of this year---dang hard thing to do==but you do not want them to suffer any more. If it comes to having him put down i think up on the hilltop would be a good place for him.
I have 3 of mine burried in a row--down by the barn--when i go to the barn sometimes i stop and talk to them----still brings tears to my eyes--i love my dogs past and present~~~~~-i will keep you guys in my prayers.

Hello everyone...thankyou so much for the kind words...I've never met any of you, but feel like somehow I know you. My German Shepherd Savage had to be put down today. The past few days have been some of the worst in my life. My brother in law came in from out of town to do all he could, but Savage was just worn out and couldn't fight any longer, so we put him down. I loved that dog, he was fiercely loyal to me, and my family. He was my watchdog when I used to work midnights at the mill. I never feared for my family's safety as long as he was close to them. My son, who has just turned three, was just getting over his fear of him. My dad said that Savage probably looked like a draft horse standing next to him. lol He was a beautiful big dog, he was 28" at the shoulder and weighed about 115 lbs, fat free...so he probably did look like a horse next to my son. Old Old Buddy and myself gave him a burial that any outdoorsman would have been proud of. After we sloped the soil on the grave, we completely covered it with large stones. Nothing will take his place and I already miss him terribly...thanks again for the kind words.

Sorry man. Just had to do that in Feb with one of mine. It just sucks. He never got to run the property we just got. He was half German. We had a full German that passed 3 years ago too. They are just awesome dogs and so unbelievably smart. Your dog is resting in a great place. I'm sure you'll feel him with you always. They are just like kids. I'm a bigger guy and I have no problem crying like a baby over my dogs. God he looks exactly liked my Buddy. Hang in there!

Sorry to hear about Savage.
Great cabin pics, thanks so much. I've had some hunting land "on the mountain" here in S.E. Oklahoma for a couple of years now and am starting the cabin build now. Place is totally off grid, but only a few miles from the nearest decent sized town, about an hour from home.
BTW, after seeing you and OOB's rifles, I have to wonder if we're both members of another forum too.

Thankyou Turkeyhunter...it's just not the same around here. My backyard feels strange and foreign without him out there tearing up the grass. I feel so guilty about not spending more time with him now. When I got him in 07, my wife and I had just got our house, and we had no child at that point, so he was our child. We used to do a lot with him...then my son was born and he took a back seat, then school came and he slid even further back. Since I've been in school, a lot of things have taken a back seat...things I still need to make up for...sadly, spending more time with him will never get to be one, and that just kills me.  OOB and I had planned on making a long cable run for him up on the hill, but that will never happen now. I have a lot of pictures and memories of him, but right now, they're just not enough...

Well...it's been three days since the "big storm" blew through eastern United States and I'm thinking I better take a drive up to the cabin to check things out. God only knows how many trees could hit the cabin if the wind was strong enough to counter-act the forces of gravity.
Old Buddy and I are taking the chain saw in case the road is blocked anywhere. That could be a strong possibility since there were hundreds of trees downed (maybe thousands) just in our general area.
We got just over an inch of rain in about 1 and one-half hours but the wind was very powerful!
We took a drive southbound on Ohio State Route 7 yesterday (about 100 miles) to Marietta, Ohio. Route 7 just follows the contours of the river all the way down. It's a beautiful drive in any season but we couldn't believe the damage. It looked like dozens of "mini-tornados" touched down here and there, destroying dozens and dozens of property. There was no power for almost 75 miles on both sides of the river and when we reached Marietta, I spoke with a gentleman there that was from Charleston, WV, and he said that there was no power in Charleston nor anywhere along I-77 all the way north to Marietta (85 miles).
Therefore, I think we need to take a trip up there within the next hour. I'm waiting for Old Buddy to finish his questions for his Nursing class and then we'll head up......probably with Big Red! I'm anxious to check the wildlife camera anyway!! If we find anything....we'll let you know....

Well, next time I'm on here I'll post pics of the antler growth of a buck that I suspect is the Big Boy from last year. He's already looking good, and I've got a new Thompson Triumph w/ a Nikon Monarch to take him with this year. I can hardly wait!
No new cabin construction lately as school is coming to a close for me (I graduate next week) and I have to get ready for boards in August. I have mentioned to Old Old Buddy we need to put the windows in and get some paint put on the cabin.

We returned from the hilltop with no damage from the wind this past Friday. Thank the Lord! We checked out the game camera and had some really good photos of several fawns this spring. They are such a beautiful animal. Old Buddy is convinced he has spotted the Big Boy from last year! I can't tell you how many raccoons we filmed as well as a few feral cats. The hill was in pretty good shape and we found no downed trees across the road. We'll go back up this week-end and put some more food pellets out and maybe some whole corn. I couldn't believe how skinny a few of the deer were. Maybe that's common right now but I figured with all the budding greenery they would hve plenty to eat. We'll fatten them up a bit. I hate to see animals go hungry. I guess it's "out of sight-out of mind" but when you see it on a camera it makes you think.

OOB, I have some friends that work for a PO Co up there in Ohio, restinging power lines and power pole at this time. They have been there 2 weeks already.

Which company is it? I have several fellows and two good friends that work for South Central out of Barnesville, Ohio.
I heard that AEP was sending help from as far away as Texas. We still have people out of power close by.

We returned from the hill after attempting to put a wire mesh basket across the deer feeder to keep the raccoons from eating all the food. Old Buddy pulled the chip out of the wildlife camera and one photo has eleven coons in it! I swear I'll go broke trying to keep the deer fed. Anyway....we got some pretty strong mesh wire to keep them out. We shaped it around the upside down bucket and fastened it with self-tapping sheet metal screws with big washers to hold it secure. The trick now is just for the deer to "come runnin" when they hear the corn spinning outward hitting that galvanized bucket. If they don't come runnin, they'll go hungry! I don't know if a doe is capable of running a pack of coons off. I'm pretty sure a buck would but I don't know. Hell, we have oppossoms, coons, squirrels, feral cats and even a dog in our pictures! One of the photos from today had a doe with three little fawns about 18 inches high. They were precious......
We loaded 150 pound of corn and put down a berry block. Those berry blocks smell so good I hated to take it out of the truck. LOL.
I want to post some of the photos but I need another 8gig card to switch out so I can bring the photos home to post. I'll probably get one in the next week or so. More later.......

Old Buddy is going pretty well as is his family. We get a chance to look over the hill behind the cabin each trip at Savy's grave each trip.
We will all miss him....he was a great dog.
On another note.....we are all getting ready for Old Buddy and his wife's graduation part next Saturday. He graduates from Nursing School on July 13th and we're having a party here at our house to celebrate his achievement as much as we are celebrating his wife, Chrissy, for keeping everything together for them for the past three years, while he was in school full-time. Im so proud of them both!
I guess he'll take his boards in about six weeks. He's applied to about three separate hospitals in the tri-state area here. (Ohio, WV and Pa.)
Talking about those dang coons....I don't know what to do about them. It appears that they are at a near epidemic proportion! Everyone tells me to dispatch them and throw them over the hill for the coyotes. I don't want to do that and draw the coyotes in. I'm afraid they would drive off all the deer. It's a shame that people quit hunting them because now they're as thick as rats!
We'll probably go up tomorrow evening maybe and switch out sd cards. Old Buddy found my spare at his house????? Anyway...we'll put some photos on here in the next few days.

I know that most of you aren't interested in looking at pictures of raccoons, but I thought that this last picture of the mother with her three fawns was absolutely gorgeous!
The coons are everywhere. We have eleven of them in one picture. They're getting like rats....they're everywhere.

Love the cabin!! You gave me a great ideal using the treated plywood siding with battens. Here in LA with our humid temps anything less than treated just doesnt hold up very well.

Thank you for your comments! We have to get the battens on and the window trim, etc., then get the entire cabin painted. Oh...I forgot....we still have the two loft windows to put in, front and rear. That should give us a pretty good breeze!
I haven't looked at your site yet.....have you already begun your construction? There are plenty of good ideas on this forum for sure.
Are snakes much of a concern where you are located? When I think of Louisiana I think of tropical atmosphere, thus, snakes! I'm sure I'll be able to learn from someone that lives there.

No i haven't started yet I'm too busy with my son playing allstar baseball. I plan on building a 14x18 with a 8x18 across the front. Yeah we have plenty of snakes that's for sure. We live about 70 miles north on new orleans just below the MS line. Our camp will be on a high bank of a good size creek about 1 mile from the house.

You'll have to take some pics of your property and everything before you start your build just to "chart" your progress. My son (Old Buddy) and I have been going to our property since the fall of 2009 for our first visit. It was my mother's property first but we had to put her in a nursing home and since she hadn't signed the property over to us kids at least five years prior, we had to sell the property. My wife and I had it appraised by a certified appraisor (according to Medicaid) and we were able to buy it for 90% of the appraised value, or a 10% discount. We started going up regular two years ago and had a dozer cut out some new roads in the fall of 2010 and started the build in late 2010. We only got the posts in the ground and had to stop for the next 7 months until we could get up the hill in my Chevy. We worked real hard on it in July-August 2011 and had most of the major work done by the early winter of 2011.
We still haven't finished the inside but we have a great time up there!
Once I bought the Honda Foreman 500, we could go up anytime we wanted....with a load!
It seems to keep your interest level up when you start posting pictures fairly regularly. I look forward to seeing your property..

These next couple of pics are for turkeyhunter...he appreciates a nice rack. I do not know for sure if this is the big boy from last year, but he does appear to have the same left bent brow tine growing. With the drought we have had...maybe he lost some size and points in his rack...last year he was a 5x5, this buck is a 4x4...maybe nutrition and age affect rack size. I always thought bucks kept their points, just lost size. Anyways here he is. I'll be looking forward to seeing him this fall.

Old Buddy and I just returned from the hill. One of the latest storms blew a tree down across one of the roads going up the hill to the cabin. We found it yesterday when we went up on the 4-wheeler. We were able to drive around it on the 4-wheeler but we knew we needed to get it out of the road. Old Buddy can move some timber with his trusty Stihl chain-saw!
We cleared the road and cut another tree up that came down on the hilltop near our feeder a couple weeks ago. We have a fairly large pile of timber cut up in 4',6',10',12' lengths. Later in the fall, we'll cut it up in firewood chunks and split us a mess of it!
We had the two grandsons with us. We had a good time with them yesterday. The three fawns in the above photo were found standing in the woods behind the cabin about 50' away from us. They stared at us for probably 5 minutes but never moved because they couldn't "wind" us. Finally, one of them layed down and the other two continued to walk around in the woods. It was really neat watching them so close.
Right before we left today, that dang feeder went off and scared Old Buddy and I half to death! The corn hitting that galvanized bucket is LOUD!

I was extremely proud of him, as was his mother and wife! It was a very nice ceremony. We had a party the following day at our home and had about 63 friends/family members here. It was such a nice week-end. The kind you only get a handfull of, in a lifetime. Thanks again.
