Will do. I'm hoping to go up in an hour or so after my grandkids have their Easter Egg Hunt. It's about 28 degrees out so I'll have to hurry them along. I can't wait to get to the cabin and get a fire going in the stove! I'll put on a pot of coffee for Old Buddy and I and the boys will tag along. We might do some shooting if it isn't too cold up there. I have to fill my feeder with about 150# of corn anyway. Talk to you later.

We just returned from the cabin....with some unfortunate news. Remember me talking about the coal company mining on the far right edge off our property (to the south). Well......they are a lot closer now and have "bull-dozed" our 250 yard target all to hell. Ha!

It was built on our neighbors property (with his permission) and since he made a deal with the coal company to mine the coal out from under his property, the target was a "casualty of war." I'm so glad we got up there two weeks ago to sight-in Old Buddy's .308. Now all we have are the targets (paper) to show for our efforts. Now we'll have to figure something else out or limit our target shooting to 100 yards.

We had a great time with the boys and they got to shoot the .22's. I sighted in my Ruger 10-22 with a small 2X7 power scope. Old Buddy has some pics to post.

It was a sad day for the target...nothing remains. lol It was fun while it lasted...I have the shooting record and that's all that matters.
I told OB I don't know what we'll enjoy the most up there now...hearing the dozer run or smelling the diesel fuel in the wind. lol I hope they're not up there too long. OOB

Forgot to add to the above post that the above pics are the way leading to the target and if you look back a few pages, you can see what the target and hillside look like.

This is where the carnage stopped...for now. This about 200 feet from our property.

As always, my nephew ad son had a great time.

Do you own your coal and mineral rights?

Kudzu, yes we do. The coal company made a paltry offer to lease 3 acre where the cabin sits. More later, gotta run.

Well.....I don't know what happened to our password but it suddenly stopped working about three days ago. I typed in my usual "signout" and it wouldn't accept it. I tried over and over again and realized that it wouldn't work any longer. My son (Old Buddy) said he noticed it that it wasn't working but somehow got it straightened out with "Mr. Cabin Builder" and now it works with a different password or log-in or whatever. Anyway......it's working again. I just can't figure out why it wouldn't accept the old one anymore.

Kudzu.......yes we have all mineral rights except coal. AEP (American Electric Power) owns all the coal under the ground around here but if they come onto your surface property, they have to reimburse you for damages to your property. They offered a "pittance" for three acres which they were going to use to set up a continuous miner to go into the highwall directly in front of the cabin about 1000 feet deep horizontally, move over about ten feet, go in another 1000 feet, move over ten feet, you get the picture. Really they wanted our property to get set up to go under our neighbors property (up above us on the hill) for the 300,000 tons of coal they believe is up there. I told them "no dice." So now....they are about 150 feet from our property line...still coming our way. If they mine under us they don't have to pay us anything as long as there is no settling of the earth. That is what the ten foot wide seams are supposed to do...hold everything up from falling in. Time will tell.

Things are about the same as they were. So far, the coal company is a couple hundred feet from my property line and they haven't moved toward us in the past two weeks. We lost our 250 yard target but it was on my neighbor's property so I can't say too much about it. Oh well.......we'll wait until they're done over there and then maybe erect
a 300 yard target.

Are you looking at any different property since we talked? I wish you all the luck in the world. But you're young....you have plenty of time.
Old Buddy and I are going up in the morning to try and locate some "corner" survey pins to paint some of our trees with bright flourescent pink paint and pink ribbon. At least the ladies will like it. It's a lot easier to see when the trees are full of leaves than even the bright orange. We probably haul up the last load of pallets I have in my driveway. We'll have about 60 up there (after tomorrow). That will sure make a lot of kindling wood for the woodburner....ought to last about 2-3 years.

Let me know what's going on with you and your project too!

Hi Gary! I am very glad to see You.
I sent You few emails but You not answer. I thought you were too busy. You have problem with email?
I read Your message in my site. I was surprised by Your talk with excavator operator. He was not drunk and calmly told you about future plans? It's unusual for Russia but hope is usual for United States. What can be happen later? As i understand they can operates outside Your property, on your neighbor's property. What may still be uncomfortable unless noise from them?
My wife and i visited our cabin lust weekend. I wrote about it in my site today. It was from 23 F (at night) to 40 F. But snowy.
Hope to see You soon.
Your friend Andrey.

Well, it was an enjoyable day at the cabin yesterday despite the diesel noise from across the way. A few days earlier, OOB and myself talked with the excavation crew and found out they're not going to mine on the side we can see, they're putting in a pond...a nice size pond which was fine with us. One end is already starting to fill from the spring they uncovered.

If you walked about 125 feet past the bucket on the hoe, that's where the hill used to be that our target sat on.

Big Red was in heaven as he loves Caterpillar equipment. He was a little afraid when we got up close to the equipment, but he still loved it.

The track hoe operator was nice enough to let Big Red get a pic. lol

The kids with their old man eating a little lunch. lol

I hope you all have been enjoying the beautiful weather...let's get back to work on those cabins! Old Buddy

Andrey-
The last pictures you took at the cabin looked like the snow was already melting pretty quickly. Are you about finished with the snow for the year or not? Is it customary to get snow in late April or May?
I guess you'll be making it to the cabin more often now.

I'm going up in the morning with 200 pounds of corn for the feeder. I'll probably take Tristin with me if he's home. It will be cool enough for a fire!

I hope the work of the coal companies do not scare the deer.
I'm going to visit it today. Hope that snow will be melted during two weeks. It's unusual even for Russia. This winter was very snowy and spring is late

Andrey....I just got back from the cabin (it's 5:30PM). I went by myself at around 12:30PM. I took the 200# of corn and loaded up the feeder. I didn't see any deer today, which isn't surprising with all the mining activity. I think they are done making the holding pond because they have moved to the far side of the hill (I can hear them but I can't see them). I killed about five wasps in the cabin.Whew! I hate to tangle with wasps!

I took some pics of the cabin from the back of it. We never take photos from that angle. I'll get Russ to post them later. It was cloudy half the day but it cleared up and got real nice out. It was quiet and peaceful on the hill. The wind was blowing (probably 20-25KPH). It appeared to dry the road out a little bit.

I couldn't take Tristin with me because he was spending the day with his other grandparents. I miss the kids not being on the hill.

I hope you had a good trip to your cabin. I hope the run-off water didn't affect your cabin.

Let me know how your trip went.

Do you think Big Red was dreaming about heavy equipment that night? I wouldn't be surprised, what a treat for him!

OB, Your little daughter is getting so big...such cute chubby cheeks

A pond will be awesome! That will be fun to watch fill, mature and explore with the kids in the future.

We still are stuck in winter here, but it is beautiful and I am enjoying each and every flake! Glad you are having good weather though-easier to get up your hill.

When does the second addition begin??? lol

This is Old Old Buddy talking to you. I'll let Old Buddy answer your questions from above. I can say that Little Buddy really likes going on the hill.....with anyone! And the baby is growing and getting sooo cute....as is yours, I'm sure.

It was so quiet and peaceful yesterday. We had a moderate amount of wind which sure helps dry the road out. I used the four-wheeeler yesterday because I knew I would tear the road up if I didn't.

I was there for about four hours and never saw a deer or a turkey. I put on a pot of coffee and just "kicked back." It was wonderful. I almost fell asleep but Old Buddy called me and woke me up right before I drifted off! Oh well.....maybe next time.

I hope eveyone is well in your family. Have a great summer

I agree with you on the nap! Just a 20-30 minute nap does it for me sometimes. And yes.....I do enjoy some time alone up there

Old Buddy and I just returned from the cabin after hauling up about 20 oak skids for firewood (kindling). We threw them off the pickup in record time because we had a major storm breathing down our necks.

We unloaded, came down off the hill, locked the gate and hit the hardtop. We only make it about three miles when the sky opened up!
It was the hardest, heaviest rain I've seen in years. I know one thing...it sure cleaned the underside of the old Chevy off real good. It was a gulley washer! I'm sure we'll be reading about flash floods as a result of it.

Haha...good thing you got off the hill before the rains came!!!!! Coming down the hill could have turned into one of those wild rides like the water Parks have

I love a good gully washer!! But I hope you didn't have issues with flash floods!

We are suppose to get rain today and snow tonight. The robins are questioning why they came back!

I have a couple relatives and friends that are down-right scared to come down the hill....when it's dry. My cousin would be terrified to come down it after the rain we had. I just put the truck in low-range four wheel drive and put the shifter selector in 1st and the truck will only go about 2-3 MPH. If the grade isn't too steep it will stop and you'll have to give it some gas to keep going. But.....when the hill is as slippery as snot on a doornob......it WILL pick up speed sliding. It just never gets going too fast for me to control it in some manner. At the foot of our second descent we are suppose to turn sharply to the right but sometimes we have to just go straight out into the woods, until the truck slows down and the turn around and go down the final (third) hill. It's the going up the steep hill in the downpouring rain that's fun (dangerous) I tried it last fall (actually I wrote about it on here somewhere) and would make it so far up and then the truck would come sliding down backwards....kind of out-of-control! After three attempts.....I gave up on it.

We're suppose to get rain tomorrow and Friday so if I go up this week-end....it will be on the Honda!

I hope you don't get any snow and that your weather starts warming up

The biggest project we need to complete is the painting of the cabin and get the battens on. I've put that off way too long. Once we get it painted, I will be satisfied for awhile (and get the pallets and firewood cut-up)

Only then will I discuss an "addition"!

Lol...we have a steep hill to go up at home and I remember getting caught in an ice storm with a car full of kids. I got about half way up before the car lost all traction, came to a stop and started sliding back down the hill...pretty scary! I was able to keep the car on the road somehow and out of the ditch. The adventure didn't end once the car came to a stop either cause then we had to walk home...so slippery...and of course I had a baby in my arms! I thought for sure I would wipe out and drop her! I think I must have had a death grip around her! Lol.

We are suppose to get 6-12 inches of snow at the cabin tonight and up to 6 here at home. I told you the robins are really, really confused!

I just returned from having ITP "mudder tires" put on the Foremand. The tires are real agressive and they are either 4 or 6 ply, compared to 2 ply on the originals. The originals still have plenty of tread but the new ones (used) look like hugh tractor tires in comparison. I'll have Old Buddy put a picure of them on here on of these days. Needless to say, the Honda should "walk right up the hill" in any terrain or weather. I know one thing for sure...it sure rides a lot rougher now

I'm sure it's in this thread somewhere, but I was wondering what Construction of this cost you. I'm designing basically the exact same thing in new York right now..a lofted 12' by 16'. Thanks for any info, and great pics! Very helpful

Josh...you're right...it's in here somewhere when someone else asked me the same thing. Basically, the cabin was $5,000 in materials, the porch was $1,000 in materials and the bunkroom was $2,000 in materials. $8,000 total.....not counting the labor of Old Buddy and myself. I couldn't afford his rate anyway All the materials were purchased from Lowes except the five large windows in the add-on room, which I picked up for $100.00 for all five! They were used but in excellent condition.

We sure have enjoyed our project up there...I'm sure you will too. Our biggest task this summer is painting the cabin and putting on the lath for the board-and-batten look and I would like to get paneling up on the inside, at least on the ceiling areas. The walls can wait.

Take lots of pictures......Old Old Buddy

Well, we haven't been to the hill for a little while. I, Old Buddy, have changed jobs from the hospital setting to home health, hoping for a different change of pace...I needed that. Old Old Buddy did get new tires for the four wheeler, they're ITP 589's...they're some serious mud slingers. They will make it much easier to get up on the hill in the muddy conditions w/ a bunch of gear piled on the four wheeler. We were really relieved to find out that they will not be "high-walling " or "stripping" the property where the target was...they're just going to leave the pond where it is. I though that migh work out well in deer season...give them something to drink while I'm taking aim. lol We are going to be putting up another target, although this one may be portable. We may be able to squeeze out a few more yards as well. Who knows. As far as the cabin goes, I don't think they're will be any additions going up this year, although I would like to see OOB buy the paint we're going to need for the cabin and it would be nice to at least get the ceiling paneled and loft carpeted for the kids. OOB's budget is larger than mine, I just provide the muscle and the equipment. lol
You never know what you'll come across in these woods, might as well be prepared. lol

A better pic of the pond, which has since filled up some.

Some pics of the back of the cabin OOB took a while back, looks like Jed Clampett's place sometimes.

The tires.

Well, we got a little painting done today. We kicked around doing brown for a while, but OOB wanted to go with black. In the end he won, after all, it was his dime. lol I was there to, once again, provide cheap labor. Big Red came along for the work day, he was the on site foreman.
We're not done yet, but I do like the color. I figure we're close to being half done. We debated on painting the deck, but if we painted the deck black, I figured it would show every drop of mud, so we're leaving it natural/treated finish for now.
Btw, sorry for the poor pic quality, OOB blames the scratch on his camera lense on one of the grandkids...he just don't know which one. lol
