That's a great looking cabin !! It's kind of the size we would like to build , how much room and headspace do you have in the loft ? Have an excellent summer !!

We have 5'6" at the center of the ceiling on a 12:12 pitch roof. The loft's inside measurements are just over 11 feet wide and eight feet deep. For the past two years it has just been used for storage but we do intend for the grandkids to stay up there when they are no longer afraid to stay overnight in the deep...dark...woods. LOL They're only 9, 6 , 3 and about 9 months old so....we have awhile to wait since the 9 year old is a girly girl!

The original cabin was 12X16 and we added an 8X16 "window-room.
We couldn't believe how much it opened the entire cabin up. In the winter my son and I sleep in the small room since the wood burner tends to get a little warm in the cabin. The window-room is a 10" step-down so it stays a little cooler in there since the heat doesn't tend to drop down. We took a four feet section out of the original wall to let the heat into the room and that has worked pretty well. We're still experimenting!

If you have a thread on here I'll look you up. I'm Old Old Buddy and my son is just Old Buddy. Thanks for the comments. We still have a long way to go...no interior yet. Just insulated studded walls but, hopefully, this summer we'll get some panelling up.

Thanks for the info ! I'm thinking of dropping the ceiling height to 7 feet to get the extra head space in the loft , I'm thinking of going 12x16 to start and add on down the road to keep costs down !! I'm also looking forward to having the Grandkids up but they're still toddlers !! All the best !

Whereabouts are you located Rick? I like your plan. I don't regret a single thing about our build. I thought 12X16 was all I could handle for awhile but then I decided to add the porch and then the window-room. We love it but it's just a cabin. No running water...no electric except when I take the generator up to power all the receptacles in the cabin, as well as a dusk-to-dawn light....oh yea.....and a five-gallon bucket with a toilet-seat and garbage bag! That's the way I like it !! We're about an hour north of Ottawa Ontario , on the Quebec side in Kazabazua ! We're not on the lake but we have deeded access to our lake ( about 2 minute walk ) there is no hydro lines which is fine by me ! I will be going solar for lights and small stuff and propane for cooking and fridge . We purchased the 3 acres 2 years ago for 11,900$ . We have our trailer on it right now but hopefully we will get started this summer . I was up there last weekend and the black flies are pretty wild right now . I hope to put up some pics soon its beautiful up there !!

Most of our family went to the cabin with my son-in-law and his parents from Colombia, South America, who were visiting. We had a beautiful day and enjoyed relaxing and trying to communicate with Tony's mother and father. I had two years of spanish in high school and four quarters in college (about 40 years ago) but I am still able to communicate (in a very broad sense of the word)! It was about 65 degrees out so we had a fire outside and inside because the cabin was only 50 degrees when we got there. I had to make about three trips up the hill with everyone on the four-wheeler but it all worked out. We had eaten at home just before we went on the hill so all I had to do was make about two pots of coffee.

It was a glorious day and Tony's parents want to come back to the cabin during their next visit because of the peace and tranquility. Amen.

Hope everyone is doing fine....enjoy your summer! Old Old Buddy

We went back to the cabin on Sunday after church. Old Buddy, his wife, my two grandsons, my granddaughter and my daughter went in two different vehicles. Since the hill had dried out, I was able to drive to the top with the four-wheeler in the bed and Old Buddy and my three grandchildren in the truck. I stayed on the hill with the kids and Old Buddy went back down the hill in the four-wheeler and brought up my daughter and daughter-in-law.

We had agreat time with a nicew fire again. We fixed hamburgers/hot dogs and the kids all decided they wanted to stay with grandma for the night so the only ones left to brave the stay-over was my daughter, Old Buddy and I. We had a really nice time since it was my daughter's first over-nighter! We had breakfast and came down around noon. We used the generator for about three hours so my daughter could read in the cabin and we utilized the dusk-to-dawn light as well. I had a great time! Didn't get any painting done....but...what the hey!

Today was definitely a "work day" at the cabin. Old Buddy and I have been wanting to take down about five trees spread around the cabin area but was too afraid due to the close proximity they had to crashing through the middle of the cabin!

My best friend came to the rescue with his forty years of experience of cutting power "right-of-way" and "electrical lineman." He brought his 150 foot rope and tied several different trees and used leverage and a few other tricks and dropped the trees without a hitch....exactly where he said they would fall. We had one tree about 18" in diameter that was only about eight feet south of the cabin and I was worried about it but it's down...thank goodness. No hurry to cut up the timber. It's well out of the way and we'll wait for cold weather anyway.

Little Buddy was there to give his opinion and was real good about staying in a safe location when told to do so. He loves to work with Daddy and Pap. I am so thankful they are down and no one was hurt in the process...after all.....cutting big trees can be very dangerous....as most of us know. Now, I guess....it's back to painting!

We didn't get to the cabin this week-end....even though I wanted to. Yesterday Old Buddy and I worked around his house all day long so I hoped that we could go up today. He ordered a load of gravel for his landscaping at home and had about a ton and a half left over so he loaded it up in my truck and figured we could take it up to the cabin and spread it around the cabin to keep from tracking mud in the cabin but since it rained most of the night.......that little task will have to wait until the road drys out so I can get up it in the truck.

I really miss it when I don't get up there. Hopefully we'll be able to go Tuesday or wednesday after work.

The deer chewed the wires and completely severed them that activate the automatic feeder for the deer.....so that's down for now. It will only take about 15 minutes to fix it but I didn't have any electrical tools or materials when we discovered it not working.

It's been about a month since we did any painting and I want to get that done as soon as possible also. It's tough getting everything done and still working every day.

I hope everyone is doing fine....everyone is busy with the summer as you can tell since there are very few posts in the past few weeks.

The little lady and I are going on the hill for a day of relaxation. I have to get a small load of firewood to bring down for a cook-out on the 4th at friends.

I plan on fixing the deer feeder while I'm there for good. I'm going to wrap metal electrical flexible conduit over the wires....hopefuly that will keep the deer out!

We still need to get the cabin painted! I'm planning on going up the night of the 3rd and staying overnight....maybe by myself again. Not much to report...I have 200# of corn to take up today. Hopefully the truck will zip right up the hill....it hasn't rained for two days.

It's awfully clammy down here in the valley....I'm sure it will be cooler on the hill. Old Old Buddy

We just got back. we made it up the hill with little fanfare....but it was really wet....still. It's so shaded it is difficult to dry out. It's a good thing I drove like a wildman going up the hill.

It still was hot on the hill....but a little cooler than here. We weren't there about an hour and a real cool wind started blowing and I knew the rain was coming! It was a real nice drizzle for about 30 minutes and then it stopped. Made it slckiery going down later.

We had a nice dinner of angus burgers and potatoes over the grill. The Mrs. and I really enjoyed ourselves and the quiet. I did get the deer feeder fixed and filled with corn, the load of wood loaded in the truck and the wood rack on the cabin porch filled to the brim with cherry for this winter

Thanks for posting the pictures of your painted cabin. I know black was a bold choice. Once you really get into the hill country of OH, KY, and TN, this flat black is very common on barns, fences, just about everything. I have come to associate this flat black with some of the most peaceful places I have ever been.

Thanks for the comments. The cabin still isn't finished but I like it as well. When it's all done I think it will really look nice...especially with the batten strips about every 12 inches.

Old Buddy, Little Buddy and I went up on the evening of the 3rd and decided to spend a night before the holiday. My son absolutely would not go without the generator and window air conditioner. Neither would I

It was 83 degrees when we arrived around 6:30PM and within three hours it was 72 degrees and felt great We had a great meal of New York strips and chili. We slept great and left fairly early the next morning. It rained a great deal of the time so going down the hill again was ....exciting

Last evening Old Buddy, Little Buddy and I went to the cabin to spend the night. We had the generator (air conditioning) so it was very pleasant. We decided to let the generator run all night long to keep the air conditioner going on thermostat control. It worked great.

Old Buddy did some clearing out with the chain saw while I mowed a fairly large spot of grass around the cabin and down to the feeder. We didn't eat anything since we had just left dinner before we went up.
We hadcoffee this morning and headed down to get cleaned up for church!

Thanks for the coments. I'll tell you....sometimes I sit down and read it from start to finish and the last time took me about 2 Hrs and 45 Mins. and I knew what it was going to say

I love to relive it because it has truly been a great time to spend with my family and thank God they all love going to Pap's cabin

I'll have to look to see if you have a site on here and read it through if you have. I didn't recognize your name but I may have missed it!

Thanks again and good luck if you are in the process or have already completed a cabin.

No. I'm new on here. I do feel like I fit right in here. I've always wanted a cabin out in the woods for a deer camp and just a place to get away. Your cabin is very similar to how I would build my own cabin. I have 2 boys, 10 and 11 yrs, that would love to help build and stay at OUR cabin, I'll make it happen one day. I just like the way you did your cabin, with your hands and your sweat. And... its a cabin, not a smallish house. It was just inspiring seeing your cabin go up. Those are some nice deer you have there too.

Thanks again for the comments. I'm sure you'll have your own cabin in good time. I was 58 when my son and I started building ours (2009)....so you will probably have one long before I did! Believe me...it will be the best time you ever spent on anything

Wow! What a beautiful day on the hill

My wife, Old Buddy and his wife and brood went up at around 12:30 PM today and the entire day was absolutely beautiful.

The high reached 73 degrees and there was a breeze blowing all day long. Old Buddy and I set to work on cutting out a bigger patch of weeds with the lawn mower and we hope to keep extending it until we get the yard the size we want it.

I emptied about 50 pounds of corn out of the feeder to make it a lot lighter and then Old Buddy and I loaded it up in the truck and took it on a tour through the woods about 100 yards behind the cabin going down the hill. We cut the road out a few weeks ago with his chain-saw.
Now the feeder will be out-of-sight from the cabin and the deer probably won't spook as easy. Actually it was a bigger job that it sounded. Old Buddy also set up the new game camera to watch the new location of the feeder. We're keeping our fingers crossed

We stacked about a dozen old pallets that had weeds growing up through them throughout the area immediately in front of the cabin. We put the pallets with the other stack totally away from the cabin and then mowed it real nice. Then we cut up about 12 pallets for kindling wood with the chain-saw. We'll have enough kindling for the entire winter and then some. Old Buddy will probably post some pics he took today. It was just a great family fun day Grandma cooked up hot dogs, baked beans and corn and it was a heack of a meal!

I hope everyone had a great week-end.....I sure did! Old Old Buddy

We're in Jefferson County. About three miles west of the Ohio River at an elevation of about 1168 feet. We're just west of Mingo Junction. Are you close to the river that runs through Athens?

Nice area. We're just east of Athens about 15 miles so a decent way from the river.

If you're 15 miles east of Athens you shouldn't be too far from the Ohio River, are you? I use to travel from Marietta , Ohio to Wilmington, Ohio via US50 (through Athens) and then US32.

Well, OOB has been on me to post some pics from the hill this past sunday. Haven't finished the painting yet. But we did get the weeds/grass cut and some wood slats cut for the winter. It was a beautiful day for sure. It was like sitting in air conditioning.
Looking up towards the cabin.

We keep trying to cut back the weeds, maybe someday it will look like grass. lol

The fire pit area cleaned up.

Enjoying the cookout.

Big Red on the move. lol

Getting the porch wood ready for fall.

The ladies are all ready to head off the hill.
